LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Linda L. Barnette upon the occasion of
her retirement

WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled; its
history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its educa-
tional professionals and the students they inspire; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of those outstanding
educational leaders, whose dedication and achievements have been instru-
mental in developing character and academic excellence in the young
people of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Linda L. Barnette upon the occasion of her retirement on Saturday, May
21, 2011, at Trinity Methodist Church in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Educators like Linda Barnette provide a tremendous service to
the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of young
people in their educational journeys and ensuring their success in their
future years; and
WHEREAS, Linda Barnette has clearly had an enduring impact on the
youth of the New York City Department of Education in Community School
District 17, as well as on the community-at-large, and accordingly
merits recognition and applause for her impressive dedication to others;
and
WHEREAS, Linda Barnette is a native of Durham, North Carolina; for the
past 30 years, she has rendered extraordinary dedicated and committed
service to the students, staff and parents of the New York City Depart-
ment of Education in Community School District 17 as a teacher, staff
developer, teacher trainer, librarian, supervisor of special education,
assistant principal, middle school principal and District Administrator
of Special Education; and
WHEREAS, Linda Barnette is a graduate of Brooklyn College of The City
University of New York where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in
elementary education, Master of Science degree in special education, and
Advanced Certificate in educational administration and supervision; and
WHEREAS, Linda Barnette holds six New York City Department of Educa-
tion licenses and permanent certifications from the New York State
Education Department; she has also taken courses at the Alliance
Theological Seminary; and
WHEREAS, Linda Barnette's past and present professional affiliations
include: the Council of Supervisors and Administrators, the American
Federation of School Administrators, the Association of Supervision and
Curriculum Development, the International Reading Association and the
Brooklyn Reading Council; and
WHEREAS, Linda Barnett has been honored by her church and the Churches
of Bedford-Stuyvesant and community; she also has been a recipient of
awards by Cambridge Who's Who, Native Black American Woman, and the
Mortis College Alumni Club, to name a few; and
WHEREAS, An extensive traveler worldwide, Linda Barnette is a faithful
and dedicated member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Bedford-Stuy-
vesant; she was one of three women ordained as Reverend in 1998 by the
late Reverend Dr. V. Simpson Turner, Sr.; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Linda Barnette serves as the Minister of Education,
member of the Trustee Board, President of the Choir, and Administrator
in the Sunday School; she is a mighty woman of God, who has always been
a leader by example; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
public education by providing their skills and talents to our schools;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Linda L. Barnette upon the occasion of her retirement, and for her
significant contributions to education in New York State; and to wish
her continued success in all of her future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Linda L. Barnette.
