LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Dr. Eric W. Kaler upon the occasion of
assuming the Presidency of the University of Minnesota on July 1, 2011

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to recognize and
publicly acknowledge those exemplary leaders in the field of education
whose purposeful lives and distinguished careers have been committed to
excellence in the education of the citizens of this great Empire State;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Dr. Eric W. Kaler upon the occasion of assuming the Presidency of the
University of Minnesota on July 1, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Eric W. Kaler earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical
Engineering (with honors) from the California Institute of Technology in
1978, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minne-
sota in 1982; and
WHEREAS, He joined the faculty of the Department of Chemical Engineer-
ing at the University of Washington in 1982, and moved to the Department
of Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware as an Associate
Professor in 1989; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, Dr. Eric W. Kaler became a Professor, and in 1996,
he was promoted to Department Chairman; two years later, he was
appointed the Elizabeth Inez Kelley Professor of Chemical Engineering;
and
WHEREAS, In 2000, Dr. Eric W. Kaler was chosen Dean of the College of
Engineering, and in 2007, he became the Provost and Senior Vice Presi-
dent for Academic Affairs at Stony Brook University; and
WHEREAS, The following year, in 2008, Dr. Eric W. Kaler assumed the
duties of Vice President for Brookhaven Affairs; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Eric W. Kaler was also a Visiting Professor at the Univ-
ersitat of Graz in 1995; his research interests are in the area of
surfactant and colloid science, statistical mechanics, and thermodynam-
ics; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Dr. Eric W.
Kaler received one of the first Presidential Young Investigator Awards
from the National Science Foundation in 1984, and the American Chemical
Society (ACS) Award in Colloid or Surface Chemistry in 1998; and
WHEREAS, He is a Fellow of both the American Association for the
Advancement of Science and the ACS, and has authored or co-authored over
200 peer-reviewed papers, and holds 10 U.S. patents; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Eric W. Kaler has been a consultant to numerous compa-
nies, and has served in a variety of positions in several professional
societies, including the leadership ladder in the ACS Division of
Colloid and Surface Chemistry, of which he was chair in 2006; and
WHEREAS, He was also the co-chair of both the 1997 and 2007 Colloid
Symposia, held at the University of Delaware; in 2010, he was elected to
the United States National Academy of Engineering; and
WHEREAS, Continually demonstrating extreme competence, extraordinary
intelligence and inspirational leadership, the extraordinary career and
accomplishments of Dr. Eric W. Kaler presents a model of educational
leadership and achievement which merits the admiration and appreciation
of the people of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, With just cause and true purpose, this Legislative Body is
pleased to recognize the significant contributions of Dr. Eric W. Kaler
to the field of education; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and

sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. Eric W. Kaler upon the occasion of assuming the esteemed
position as President of the University of Minnesota; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Eric W. Kaler.
