LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the Mount
Horeb Baptist Church of Corona, New York, to be celebrated on July 22,
2011
WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and this Nation to pay
tribute to those institutions and individuals which have contributed to
the ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes pleasure in commemorating the
85th Anniversary of the Mount Horeb Baptist Church of Corona, New York,
to be celebrated at an Anniversary Banquet at the Courtyard by Marriott
LaGuardia Airport in East Elmhurst, New York, on Friday, July 22, 2011;
and
WHEREAS, The Mount Horeb Baptist Church called Reverend Gilbert Pick-
ett, Sr. to be their fourth Pastor in March of 1998; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous leadership of Reverend Gilbert Pickett,
Sr., Mount Horeb has taken in over 460 members, established over 20
ministries, and completed major renovations throughout the church edif-
ice; and
WHEREAS, In addition to preaching and teaching the Word of God, Rever-
end Gilbert Pickett, Sr. has been at the forefront of Mount Horeb's
Health and Wellness Education Ministry and their Community Outreach
Ministry; and
WHEREAS, The Health and Wellness Ministry has been awarded and recog-
nized by the American Diabetes Association and The American Cancer Soci-
ety and is affiliated with and serves the community through The New York
City Department of Mental Health and Hygiene, The Department of Homeless
Services of New York and Elmhurst Care Center; and
WHEREAS, The Health and Wellness Ministry, comprised of Registered
Professional Nurses certified in their fields of expertise, conducts a
Health and Wellness corner in Mount Horeb every 2nd and 4th Sunday;
during these sessions the ministry offers blood pressure monitoring,
diabetic education, referrals, as well as general health education; and
WHEREAS, The Community Outreach Ministry of Mount Horeb provides a
weekly soup kitchen, a food and clothing pantry, and a summer youth
program; and
WHEREAS, During 2005, Mount Horeb's Eternal Praise Ministry won the
Dance Category at Madison Square Garden during the McDonald's Gospel
Fest Competition; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Gilbert Pickett, Sr. and the congregation of Mount
Horeb Baptist Church's compassion for people and passion for missionary
work, was displayed during relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina victims;
and
WHEREAS, Reverend Gilbert Pickett, Sr. made two trips to Louisiana and
the church collected and shipped over 30 barrels of clothing, shoes and
linen to the victims; and
WHEREAS, The Mount Horeb Baptist Church, is also involved in the
relief effort for the tornado victims in Alabama and Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, The Mount Horeb Baptist Church stands on the threshold of
tomorrow, prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades while
retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 85th Anniversary of the Mount Horeb Baptist Church of
Corona, New York, to be observed on July 22, 2011, fully confident that
this commemoration reflects the belief in those values which enhance the
dignity and purpose of life; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Reverend Gilbert Pickett, Sr., Senior Pastor, Mount Horeb
Baptist Church, 190-20 Rev. E. E. Jarvis Drive, Corona, New York 11368.
