LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Kirby White upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by the United Tenants of Albany
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lives, personal endeavors and
community service are an example and inspiration to their colleagues,
friends, and family; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Kirby White upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition
by the United Tenants of Albany; this auspicious occasion will be cele-
brated at the organization's 40th Annual Meeting; and
WHEREAS, Kirby White grew up in a household that operated a family-
owned business that cultivated, packaged, and marketed seeds for farmers
and gardeners in Cambridge, New York; and
WHEREAS, The academic career of Kirby White included participation in
the Iowa Writers Institute in the 1960s; he moved on to teach English in
a variety of high schools and colleges in several locations throughout
the United States; and
WHEREAS, Kirby White's combination of literary skills and business
acumen made him a unique contributor to social movements, including the
National Land Stewardship League and the Institute for Community Econom-
ics; and
WHEREAS, In the 1980s, Kirby White began working with the United
Tenants of Albany where he became the key facilitator in organizing
campaigns that developed the Community Loan Fund of the Capital Region,
the Albany Community Land Trust, and the Affordable Housing Partnership;
and
WHEREAS, Kirby White has written three fictional mystery novels, THE
LONG STAIR, WILDER POND, and EDGE OF ALBANY, with community development
and land use issues set in Albany, New York, and the Adirondacks; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his professional and communi-
ty service, a period of constructive involvement, Kirby White has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor, and has earned the respect
and admiration of his colleagues, family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Kirby White has displayed throughout
his life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Kirby White upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the United Tenants of Albany; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kirby White.
