LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Chancellor Emeritus Dr. James D.
Watson and Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis Watson on their 45 years of dedication
to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and their invaluable contributions to
science and society on Long Island and beyond on July 12, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to publicly commend
those outstanding individuals within the State of New York whose life-
long dedication to medical research results in groundbreaking discover-
ies which improve the lives of those affected by the world's most devas-
tating diseases; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Chancellor Emeritus Dr. James D. Watson and Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis Watson
on their 45 years of dedication to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and
their invaluable contributions to science and society on Long Island and
beyond to be celebrated on July 12, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Watson served as Director of Cold Spring Harbor Laborato-
ry (CSHL) from 1968-1994; President from 1994-2003; and Chancellor from
2003-2007; and
WHEREAS, That CSHL continues to lead the global field of molecular
biology and genetics is a testament to Dr. James D. Watson's foresight;
and
WHEREAS, Under his auspices, CSHL has enhanced its excellence in basic
research and is rated one of the world's top research institutions; and
WHEREAS, Sparked by Dr. James D. Watson, these research programs are
paying huge dividends in treating diseases such as cancer and neurologi-
cal disorders; CSHL's Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Insti-
tute-designated cancer center on Long Island and has held this desig-
nation for more than 25 years; and
WHEREAS, This year, CSHL celebrated the 10th graduating class of the
Watson School of Biological Sciences; the innovative Ph.D. program that
bears the Watson name is evidence that Dr. Watson's mark on the field of
scientific education is no less significant; and
WHEREAS, A robust Meetings & Courses program brings more than 12,500
top scientists to Long Island every year, while the CSHL Press publishes
textbooks, manuals and journals that are essential reading for the next
generation of Nobel Prize winners; and
WHEREAS, CSHL's DNA Learning Center, begun under Dr. James D. Watson's
Directorship of the Laboratory, was the world's first science center
dedicated to genetics education and, over the course of two decades, has
provided more than 420,000 New York State children and teachers hands-on
learning experiences; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth Lewis Watson was instrumental in the Laboratory's
designation on the National Register of Historic Places, and for CSHL's
joining the American Public Gardens Association as the Bungtown Botan-
ical Garden; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth Lewis Watson has been a devoted trustee of the
Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities and has served
on the New York State Board for Historic Preservation, the New York
Landmarks Preservation Foundation and the Archives of American Art; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to applaud Dr. and Mrs. Watson
for their stewardship of the landscape of Long Island's North Shore and
their cultivation of its rich history and cultural programs; and
WHEREAS, Individuals such as Chancellor Emeritus Dr. James D. Watson
and Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis Watson, who have given so selflessly of their
skills and dedication in performing vital medical research to bring us
closer to eradicating deadly diseases, are worthy and due the highest

commendation for their contributions to all of humanity; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Chancellor Emeritus Dr. James D. Watson and Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis
Watson on their 45 years of dedication to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory,
and their invaluable contributions to science and society on Long Island
and beyond to be celebrated on July 12, 2013; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Chancellor Emeritus Dr. James D. Watson and Mrs. Elizabeth
Lewis Watson.
