LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Gretchen Sprock upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the inaugural Community Spirit Award by Rome
Art and Community Center on June 21, 2013
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Gretchen
Sprock upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the inaugur-
al Community Spirit Award by Rome Art and Community Center to be cele-
brated at the Lunch on the Lawn event on Friday, June 21, 2013, at RACC,
Stevens-Kingsley Pavilion; and
WHEREAS, The Community Spirit Award is given to an individual who
exemplifies the true meaning of community spirit in Rome, New York; this
worthy award will be given annually to an individual nominated by commu-
nity members, who helps to improve the lives of area residents, works in
partnership with individuals or organizations to achieve community
service goals, and who exhibits positivity, team work, resourcefulness
and dedication; and
WHEREAS, Gretchen Sprock is known throughout the region for her gener-
osity, spirit of volunteerism and love for her close-knit community; and
WHEREAS, For many years, Gretchen Sprock has taken on an active role
in the community, serving on boards of directors for dozens of organiza-
tions; she has impacted several organizations, including Rome United
Way, Rome Rescue Mission, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Rome Memorial Hospi-
tal, Rome College Foundation and the Capitol Theater, reflecting tire-
less efforts, especially on behalf of those less fortunate; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her work with non-profit organizations, Gret-
chen Sprock has served on the Oneida County Community Services Board,
advocating for people with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman has been the recipient of numerous
awards and accolades including the Rome Hospital Foundation's Smart
Woman Award, and the 2011 State Senate Women of Distinction Award; and
WHEREAS, Gretchen Sprock is well-known for her involvement in Rome
Twigs, the Upstate Cerebral Palsy Board of Directors, the Rome Chamber
of Commerce, and the Wednesday Morning Club, as well as a life member of
the Delta Omega Sorority; and
WHEREAS, She is a past member of the Rome Hospital Board of Directors,
the Rome United Way Board of Directors and the Rome Historical Society,
a past trustee of Jervis Public Library, a past member of the Mid-York
Library Board and past-president of the Rome Twigs; and
WHEREAS, While President of the Rome Twigs, Gretchen Sprock, along
with the then hospital administrator, started the Tree of Lights, a
fund-raiser which is still currently held which supports the hospital;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Gretchen Sprock upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the inaugural Community Spirit Award by Rome Art and Community Center
on June 21, 2013; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Gretchen Sprock.
