LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Edward P. Swyer upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of A Community of Excellence Award by The
College of Saint Rose
WHEREAS, Edward P. Swyer has given not only of his time and energies but
also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Edward P.
Swyer upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of A Community
of Excellence Award by The College of Saint Rose; and
WHEREAS, Having graduated from Tufts University with a Bachelor of
Science in Civil Engineering, Edward Swyer is the President and CEO of
The Swyer Companies, a real estate company that owns and manages commer-
cial developments in the Capital District; the most notable project is
Stuyvesant Plaza in Guilderland, New York, a mixed-use development of
retail stores and professional offices; and
WHEREAS, Currently serving as a Director of the University at Albany
Foundation, Edward Swyer has served as Vice Chairman of the Board of the
Saratoga Performing Arts Center; working with The Nature Conservancy,
he, representing his family, established the Lewis A. Swyer Mill Creek
Preserve along the Hudson River in Columbia County; and
WHEREAS, The preserve is one of five freshwater estuaries in New York
State that rise and fall with the tide and provide home to unique flora
and fauna; it is equipped with a boardwalk for visitors and has grown
from an initial 95 acres to almost 900 acres of protected land; and
WHEREAS, The Swyer Family Foundation, Inc. has an ongoing commitment
to The Legal Project, a sister organization to the Capital District
Women's Bar Association, that provides free legal services for victims
of domestic violence and issues such as bankruptcy and affordable hous-
ing; through the Swyer Family Foundation, Edward Swyer philanthropic
projects also include long-term commitments to scholarships at area
colleges and universities; and
WHEREAS, In addition to The College of Saint Rose, there are scholar-
ships and programs to assist students at Skidmore College, University at
Albany, Albany Law School, Siena College and Marist College; and
WHEREAS, Edward Swyer also worked with his mother, Ann Swyer, to
establish the Ann Swyer Ten Broeck Mansion Endowment Fund of The Commu-
nity Foundation of the Greater Capital Region to insure the Mansion's
long term viability; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Edward Swyer has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which Edward Swyer has displayed throughout
his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Edward P. Swyer upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of A Community of Excellence Award by The College of Saint Rose; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Edward P. Swyer.
