LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Brent Duncan Memorial Scholarship
Fund, Inc. upon the occasion of its Third Annual Brent Duncan Scholar-
ship Award Ceremony and Memorial Service on June 15, 2013
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly moved to commend
the Brent Duncan Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. upon the occasion of
the Third Annual Brent Duncan Scholarship Award Ceremony and Memorial
Service, held on Saturday, June 15, 2013, in Canarsie Park, Brooklyn,
New York; and
WHEREAS, Brent Duncan was slain by a bullet at the age of 18, on June
19, 2010; and
WHEREAS, An ambitious young man and a model student, Brent Duncan
attended Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York, a year early; he
was known for his passion to help others, his use of humor to lessen the
difficulties of life, and his gentle, respectful spirit; and
WHEREAS, The Brent Duncan Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in
this promising young man's honor to help young people achieve the dreams
he was denied; and
WHEREAS, The Fund provides college-bound seniors at Medgar Evers
Preparatory School scholarships to help ease the burden of college
expenses; to date, it has provided six scholarships; and
WHEREAS, The Brent Duncan Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc., plans other
activities to keep alive the memory of a young man taken away by
violence; the organization intends to get a street named after Brent
Duncan, and wants to establish the Brent D. Duncan Youth Center; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Brent Duncan Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. upon the occa-
sion of its Third Annual Brent Duncan Scholarship Award Ceremony and
Memorial Service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Brent Duncan Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc.
