LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Georgia Slaughter-Hughes upon the
occasion of her 100th Birthday

WHEREAS, Georgia Slaughter-Hughes, lovingly known as "Auntie", was born
Georgia Slaughter in Cascade, Virginia on July 9, 1913, the fifth of six
children; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman, who has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the
stamina and courage to savor a full life, has inspired the lives of her
many friends and family; and
WHEREAS, She was educated in the Cascade school system and lived in
the Jim Crow South before relocating to New York in 1934 to live with an
older sister who was already working there; and
WHEREAS, Georgia Slaughter-Hughes was employed in the types of jobs in
which Blacks who migrated from the South commonly worked, such as nurse
maid, child caretaker, seamstress, and launderer; and
WHEREAS, Although not directly involved, she was a supporter of the
civil rights movement and especially the work of Dr. King; and
WHEREAS, Georgia Slaughter-Hughes was extremely happy and proud in
November 2008, when President Barack Obama became the first African-Am-
erican President of the United States, a day she believed she would
never see in her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Slaughter-Hughes remains active by attending the Stuyves-
ant Heights Christian Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn where she
has been a member for many years; and
WHEREAS, She is a proud member of the Seniors' Ministry at the Church
and has a great love of gospel music; she also loves speaking to and
interacting with young children; and
WHEREAS, On her 95th birthday, she achieved one of her life-long
dreams, that of riding a motorcycle for the first time, an event which
was recorded in OUR TIME PRESS; and
WHEREAS, This beloved lady has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which come only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Georgia Slaughter-Hughes upon the occasion of her 100th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Georgia Slaughter-Hughes.
