LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Goldie Steinberg upon the occasion
of celebrating her 113th Birthday

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is pleased to congratulate
Goldie Steinberg upon the occasion of celebrating her 113th Birthday;
she marked this remarkable milestone at a party with family, friends,
and members of the community, at the Grandell Rehabilitation and Nursing
Center in Long Beach, New York; and
WHEREAS, Goldie Steinberg is officially the 14th oldest person in the
world, the ninth oldest person in the United States, and the second
oldest person in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Born on October 30, 1900, in Kishinev, Romania, Goldie Stein-
berg immigrated to the United States in 1923 after her uncle offered the
opportunity to her and her sister; and
WHEREAS, Goldie Steinberg resided in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, with her
husband, the late Phillip Steinberg, who died in 1967; she worked as a
seamstress, making clothing for children, until her retirement at the
age of 83; and
WHEREAS, Goldie Steinberg is the loving mother of one son and one
daughter, and the proud grandmother of four grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren; she credits her incredible longevity to the love
and happiness of her family; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; she is an
avid reader, crochets daily, and is a devoted fan of the New York
Yankees; and
WHEREAS, A much-loved and active resident of the Grandell Rehabili-
tation and Nursing Center since 2004, Goldie Steinberg is well-known for
her kindness, as well as her concern for the well-being of all around
her; she knits for the staff and makes sure that the needs of the young-
er residents are taken of; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, This beloved woman has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, Goldie Steinberg was three years old when the Wright Brothers
took their famous first flight; she was a teenager during World War I,
and 44 years old at the end of World War II; she was a senior citizen
when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Goldie Steinberg upon the occasion of her 113th Birthday;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Goldie Steinberg.
