LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Town
of Perry, New York
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the proud and distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
200th Anniversary of the Town of Perry, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Perry was established in 1814 from part of the
Town of Leicester, now in Livingston County; and
WHEREAS, The signing of the Big Tree Treaty with the Iroquois nation
at Genesee in 1797, gave the signal that land was now available for the
masses of settlers who came from New England; this treaty led to the
developer's purchases of the lands west of the Genesee River; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Gates is recognized as the first permanent resident of
Perry, New York; he cleared the land on a site overlooking Silver Lake,
raised the first wheat crop, and planted the first orchard; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Perry is located on a plateau that overlooks both
the Genesee Valley and the Oatka Valley; to the east of Perry lies
Letchworth State Park, and to the south is Silver Lake; and
WHEREAS, The location of Perry provides beautiful scenery that
includes fields of grain and corn, beans, soybeans, alfalfa, as well as
other produce, and is home to some of the most productive farms found in
the state of New York; large barns, housing 700 or more milking cows,
provide a very productive industry to this area; and
WHEREAS, The Wyoming County Council of the Arts is located in the
Business District of Perry, and provides much of the backing for the
county's cultural events, some of which include music, plays, and
historic interpretations; and
WHEREAS, Built in 1914, The Perry Public Library is located on the
first known cemetery in Perry, and has a large collection of reading
materials, tapes, computers, and archives; and
WHEREAS, In addition, The Perry Central School District has the long-
est surviving Alumni Association in the country; each year the Alumni
Banquet welcomes the recent graduates into the Alumni Association and
honors the history of past graduates; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, the Town of Perry, New York, continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive busi-
ness, institutional and educational climate, and providing all essential
services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Perry, New York, recog-
nizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of
the community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town of Perry, New York.
