LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Dr. James L. Muyskens upon the occa-
sion of the completion of his tenure as President of Queens College of
the City University of New York, after many years of distinguished
service on behalf of higher education

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and character
whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in this great
State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Dr. James L. Muyskens upon the occasion of the completion of his tenure
as President of Queens College of the City University of New York, after
many years of distinguished service on behalf of higher education effec-
tive December 31, 2013; he will be returning to teaching; and
WHEREAS, Dr. James L. Muyskens was appointed Queens College's ninth
president in July of 2002; during his tenure, he added a number of new
programs, including business administration, neuroscience, graphic
design, Chinese, and bioinformatics; and
WHEREAS, Over the years at Queens College, Dr. James L. Muyskens guid-
ed the recruitment of hundreds of new faculty, oversaw the completion of
the renovation of Powdermaker Hall (the college's primary classroom
facility) as well as the addition to Remsen Hall that now houses new
chemistry laboratories; and
WHEREAS, In the Fall of 2009, Dr. James L. Muyskens welcomed students
to The Summit, the college's first-ever residence hall; he recently
oversaw the college's ambitious new strategic planning initiative, which
established goals for the college to achieve during the next 20 years;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. James L. Muyskens' extensive administrative experience
includes serving as Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the
34-campus University System of Georgia; he also spent seven years as
Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas;
and
WHEREAS, His appointment to Queens College marked his return to the
City University of New York; he began his career at Hunter College as an
assistant professor of philosophy and moved through the ranks to full
professor; he also served Hunter as chair of its Department of Philoso-
phy and as Associate Provost and Acting Provost; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Central College in Iowa, Dr. James L. Muyskens
earned a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary,
and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Michigan; and
WHEREAS, His publications include two books, THE SUFFICIENCY OF HOPE
and MORAL PROBLEMS IN NURSING: A PHILOSOPHICAL INVESTIGATION, as well as
numerous articles concerning the philosophy of religion and ethics; and
WHEREAS, As President of Queens College, Dr. James L. Muyskens has
continually demonstrated an impressive dedication, an unparalleled
devotion and an unremitting enthusiasm for the quality of the educa-
tional programs and opportunities offered at the College for the benefit
of its faculty and students, as well as for the entire community; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. James L. Muyskens upon the occasion of the completion of his
tenure as President of Queens College of the City University of New
York, after many years of distinguished service on behalf of higher
education; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. James L. Muyskens.
