LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Adam Miller Toy and Bicycle of
Batavia, New York, upon the occasion of its designation as the recipient
of the 2013 Retail Business of the Year Award by the Genesee County
Chamber of Commerce

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are enhanced by the concerned and dedicated efforts of business organ-
izations and individuals that generously contribute to the welfare of
the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Adam Miller Toy and Bicycle of Batavia, New York, upon the occasion
of its designation as the recipient of the 2013 Retail Business of the
Year Award by the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce; this momentous
occasion will be celebrated at the Chamber's Annual Awards Ceremony on
Saturday, February 22, 2014, at the Clarion Hotel; and
WHEREAS, Adam Miller Toy and Bicycle Shop was purchased in 1946 from
Walter J. Davis; Mr. Davis started his wheel goods store in 1918, and in
1929 constructed a building at 8 Center Street, Batavia, New York, to
sell bicycles, tricycles, metal pedal cars, and other various types of
toys; and
WHEREAS, In 1946, Adam F. Miller became the proud owner of the Davis
Wheel Goods store, which became Adam Miller Wheel Goods; sometime in the
mid 1950's, Mr. Miller put up a neon sign outside the store to draw
business, and the same sign remains today as a fixture in the community;
and
WHEREAS, Growing the business steadily, Adam F. Miller increased the
bicycle lines to include Schwinn, and added onto the building to include
a year-round, full service repair shop; with the additional space, Mr.
Miller expanded into toys and hobbies for children of all ages; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, everything sold at the Adam Miller Toy and Bicy-
cle Shop was assembled and serviced at the store; customer satisfaction
was, and continues to be the company's number one goal; and
WHEREAS, In the late 1970's Adam F. Miller retired and turned the
store over to his two children, Joyce and Gary; they continued to run
the family-owned store for another 25 years before selling to long-time
family friends, John and Cathy Roche; the Roche's have learned the
traditions the Miller's have brought to the Adam Miller Toy and Bicycle
Shop, and will continue to carry them on into the future; and
WHEREAS, Adam Miller Toy and Bicycle Shop demonstrates how small local
shops can continue to be relevant in the age of large national chain
stores touting impersonal and high volume sales in a market that is
increasingly moving towards internet sales; and
WHEREAS, By focusing on a niche market that the larger stores have
declined to embrace, as well as specializing in personal service that
can be done only in a locally-minded manner, John Roche and the staff of
Adam Miller Toy and Bicycle Shop bring a unique business to Genesee
County; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Adam Miller Toy
and Bicycle Shop of Batavia, New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions and individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought
to our attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Adam Miller Toy and Bicycle of Batavia, New York, upon the
occasion of its designation as the recipient of the 2013 Retail Business
of the Year Award by the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mr. and Mrs. John Roche, Adam Miller Toy and Bicycle, Bata-
via, New York.
