LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring New Hyde Park Memorial High School
students Christa Alexander and Jerryl Abraham upon the occasion of
winning first and second place in the Gotham City Networking First Annu-
al High School Oratorical Competition
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend and pay
tribute to those young people who, by achieving outstanding success in
educational competition, have inspired and brought pride to our majestic
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor New
Hyde Park Memorial High School students Christa Alexander and Jerryl
Abraham upon the occasion of winning first and second place in the
Gotham City Networking First Annual High School Oratorical Competition
on Saturday, November 9, 2013, in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Conducted in partnership with the Mercy College School of
Business, the theme of the competition was "The Progress of Change";
orations could focus either on a change in history that brought
progress, or a change believed to be necessary, and were judged based on
evidence of the depth of research on the chosen topic, presence and
delivery, originality, quality of speech, and oration duration; and
WHEREAS, Christa Alexander's first-place winning oration discussed
former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Eight Point Peace
Plan for Syria; and
WHEREAS, Jerryl Abraham's second-place winning oration focused on the
newly discovered element, graphene, and its endless scientific possibil-
ities; and
WHEREAS, Both members of the Class of 2014, these outstanding students
have brought enduring honor to New Hyde Park Memorial High School, as
well as their families, through their impressive achievements; and
WHEREAS, Educational competitions which serve to better prepare our
students for their future participation in the marketplace of ideas are
worthy of praise and support; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose, these
scholars now stand honorably, with just pride in their accomplishments,
and in eager anticipation of future challenges, understanding and appre-
ciating the caring counsel and support provided by their teachers and
parents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor New Hyde Park Memorial High School students Christa Alexander and
Jerryl Abraham upon the occasion of winning first and second place in
the Gotham City Networking First Annual High School Oratorical Competi-
tion; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Christa Alexander and Jerryl Abraham.
