LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Harbor
Child Care

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of commitment and high achievement whose
purpose has been dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the education
of the children of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commemorate the 40th Anni-
versary of Harbor Child Care, to be celebrated on Friday, October 18,
2013; and
WHEREAS, The schools of a community reflect the character and values
of that community; the school officials, parents, faculty and children
of Harbor Child Care, on the occasion of celebrating its 40th Anniver-
sary, may take just pride in its heritage of quality leadership, teach-
ing, and achievement; and
WHEREAS, Harbor Child Care is a premier childcare organization in
Nassau County; for 40 years it has provided early care and learning to
children 12 weeks old to 12 years old; and
WHEREAS, Harbor Child Care began its luminous existence in 1973, when
its founder, Jill Rooney, started a play group for nine children in her
Sea Cliff, New York, home; within two months, there were 25 children
playing in her renovated basement; and
WHEREAS, Today, Executive Director Jill Rooney oversees seven separate
child care centers which collectively serve 800 children and employ 214
full time teachers and staff; and
WHEREAS, Harbor Child Care takes pride in providing the children in
its charge with a stimulating curriculum based on the High Scope Cogni-
tive Development Program, a 40-year research-based curriculum generally
regarded as the leading early childhood educational approach; and
WHEREAS, In addition to world-class instruction, Harbor Child Care's
comprehensive centers offer breakfast, lunch and snacks, a before and
after school program, holiday care, and a wonderful summer program; and
WHEREAS, This vital organization does more than provide a safe and
stimulating learning environment for children; it provides support and
peace of mind to their hardworking parents; and
WHEREAS, Harbor Child Care is proudly aware of its distinguished past
and eager to fulfill its commitment to its parents, students and commu-
nity; with vision and purpose, this fine organization is planning for
the ebb and swell of growth and change it will encounter in the years to
come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Harbor Child Care; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Jill Rooney, Executive Director, Harbor Child Care.
