LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Floral
Park Pool to be celebrated July 12, 2013
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of organizations
and individuals who devote themselves to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry and are greatly enriched, as well, by the availability
of exceptional recreational facilities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of the Floral Park Pool to be observed at its
50th Anniversary Celebration Night on Friday, July 12, 2013; many fun-
filled family activities have been planned to celebrate this auspicious
milestone; and
WHEREAS, In 1962, in response to a group of residents wanting a
village pool, Mayor Leslie Carpenter and the Village Board appointed
Trustee Robert Burkhardt to form a committee to explore the possibility
of building a pool in the Village of Floral Park; and
WHEREAS, The committee, comprised of district leaders from different
areas of the village, circulated petitions and recommended the
construction of a Village Swimming Pool to enhance the Recreation Facil-
ity; and
WHEREAS, On December 15, 1962, Floral Park residents approved a swim-
ming pool in a special village referendum; on June 29, 1963, the Floral
Park Pool opened to a most successful season; and
WHEREAS, A formal dedication of the Village Swimming Pool was held on
July 13, 1963; residents have been able to enjoy many hot summers cool-
ing off in the pool while enjoying the camaraderie of their neighbors;
and
WHEREAS, Over the years, swimming lessons, the Pirates Swim Team, a
wonderful variety of aquatic recreational activities, and family theme
nights have evolved making the pool one of the jewels in Floral Park;
and
WHEREAS, In 2003, a new state-of-the-art Recreation/Pool Building was
dedicated; the building includes a snack bar, upper sun deck, showers,
restrooms, offices, meeting rooms and an elevator; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to recognize and
applaud recreational facilities such as the Floral Park Pool which serve
the community and its citizens with diligence and compassionate commit-
ment, improving the quality of life in the community; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Floral Park Pool; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Floral Park Pool.
