LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Firefighter Shawn Jordan upon the
occasion of his designation as Firefighter of the Year by the Wayne
County Volunteer Firemen's Association for his heroic action in saving a
life
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend the caring concern and heroic acts of individuals in public
service who take prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations
in an effort to preserve the life of another; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Firefighter Shawn Jordan upon the occasion of his designation as Fire-
fighter of the Year by the Wayne County Volunteer Firemen's Association
for his heroic action in saving a life; he will be honored at the Asso-
ciation's Annual Banquet on Saturday, November 9, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Firefighter Shawn Jordan has been a member of the Fairville
Fire Department since January 2002; and
WHEREAS, A 2002 graduate of Newark High School, Shawn Jordan has
always demonstrated a remarkable commitment to serving his community and
his nation; he joined the United States Army in 2002, where he was a K-9
handler, serving in Iraq with the 511th Military Police; in February
2009 he joined the Rochester Police Department in Recruit Class No. 50;
and
WHEREAS, It was in his capacity as a police officer that Shawn Jordan
fearlessly and skillfully saved the life of a woman injured by a
gunshot; and
WHEREAS, Shawn Jordan and fellow Rochester police officers responded
to the scene of a local restaurant following a report of a man with a
gun; upon their arrival at the busy establishment, the officers
confronted and subdued one suspect who fired his gun before being hand-
cuffed; and
WHEREAS, Two other suspects engaged with the officers, and Shawn
Jordan received several lacerations and a significant injury to his knee
which bled extensively; however, when the fighting concluded and he
learned that a woman had been shot, this selfless public servant, heed-
less of his own injuries, immediately rushed to his vehicle to get a
trauma kit; and
WHEREAS, Shawn Jordan drew on his extensive background and training to
tend to the victim; he applied a chest wound patch and trauma gauze to
the woman, which eased her breathing and slowed her blood loss until the
fire department arrived; and
WHEREAS, Firefighter and Police Officer Shawn Jordan showed great
courage and professionalism under extraordinary circumstances, remaining
calm and multitasking amid chaos, and rendering critical first aid to a
victim who, without his quick thinking, would have lost her life; and
WHEREAS, With Shawn Jordan throughout have been his girlfriend, Saman-
tha Pittman, and his daughter, Emmarie Jordan, both of whom feel privi-
leged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Shawn Jordan has truly distinguished himself as one of New
York's finest; when an act of such heroism is brought to our official
attention, the same should be memorialized for the edification and
emulation of all; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Firefighter Shawn Jordan upon the occasion of his designation as
Firefighter of the Year by the Wayne County Volunteer Firemen's Associ-
ation for his heroic action in saving a life; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Firefighter Shawn Jordan.
