LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dorothy Walz upon the occasion of her
designation as 2013 Person of the Year by the VALLEY STREAM HERALD, on
December 26, 2013

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Walz has given not only of her time and energies but
also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dorothy Walz
upon the occasion of her designation as 2013 Person of the Year by the
VALLEY STREAM HERALD, on December 26, 2013; and
WHEREAS, The quality of life in the Valley Stream, New York, community
has been immeasurably enhanced by Dorothy Walz's dedicated volunteer
work over the past 48 years; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Walz is truly a model of civic and community engage-
ment; she has been a PTA leader, President of the Garden Club, and a
committed member of the Civilian Patrol; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Walz grew up in Queens, New York, and married her
husband, the late Charles Walz, in 1955; she moved to Valley Stream in
1965; and
WHEREAS, She began volunteering in the late 1960s, when her oldest son
entered Clear Stream Avenue School; she served as PTA president there
for two years, as the Central/Memorial PTSA president for another two,
and then led the Valley Stream Council of PTAs, a collaboration of units
from all the community's public schools, for two separate two-year
stints; she also advocated for children with special needs, co-creating
the Special Education Parent Teacher Association; and
WHEREAS, This impressive but humble woman has, for 14 years, been an
active member of the Valley Stream Civilian Patrol, a neighborhood watch
organization in which members patrol the village as well as North and
South Valley Stream in their own vehicles; she is currently secretary of
the organization, in addition to serving as its "base," communicating
with other members who are out on the road; and
WHEREAS, As President of the Garden Club, Dorothy Walz worked assid-
uously for the beautification of her community; among her notable
efforts, she and her fellow Garden Club members planted an herb garden
outside the Pagan-Fletcher Restoration which serves as a local history
museum maintained by the Valley Stream Historical Society; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy Walz is widely admired throughout her community for
her hard work, versatility, prodigious leadership abilities, extreme
competence, responsiveness to the needs of her neighbors, and genuine
concern for the wellbeing of all; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Dorothy Walz has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her sons, Charles and Alan, and
her grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life
and rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Dorothy Walz has displayed through-
out her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dorothy Walz upon the occasion of her designation as 2013 Person
of the Year by the VALLEY STREAM HERALD; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dorothy Walz.
