LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Jeffrey Haber, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Jeffrey Haber of Schodack, New York, died on Friday, July 26,
2013; and
WHEREAS, Born in Schodack, to the late Glenn S. and Dorothy Dorn
Haber, Jeffrey Haber accomplished many things in his life, including
being named the Most Valuable Player in 1962 while a member of the Maple
Hill School baseball team, where as a pitcher he struck out 20 of 21 in
a seven-inning game and 112 opposing batters in 50 and 1/3 innings; and
WHEREAS, After high school, Jeffrey Haber attended SUNY Geneseo and
earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and History; he also
earned All-SUNY conference honorable mention for baseball in 1965; and
WHEREAS, After returning home from college, Jeffrey Haber became an
active member of the Castleton/Schodack community; some of his involve-
ments included: coaching the Castleton American Legion baseball team in
1968, serving on the board of governors and the other positions at
Cordial Greens Country Club, serving as president as well as other
offices in the Castleton/Schodack Jaycees, chairing a townwide cancer
drive, teaching an adult Sunday school class at Trinity Lutheran Church,
and serving on and raising funds for the Castleton Cemetery Association;
and
WHEREAS, Jeffrey Haber's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Jeffrey Haber was a founding member of Olde Kinderhook Golf
Club and developed many friendships at the club; amongst his many golf
achievements, he was a past senior club champion, winning the event in
2003; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Jeffrey Haber served as a member and trustee of the
Castleton Volunteer Fire Company, 17 years as treasurer of the Castleton
Boat Club, and was a past master of Sunnyside Lodge 731 F&AM; and
WHEREAS, Jeffrey Haber dedicated his adult professional life to local
democracy; in 1974, he was elected to the Schodack Town Board and four
years later to the first of four consecutive terms as supervisor of the
Town of Schodack; and
WHEREAS, In 1985, Jeffrey Haber was selected to become the executive
director and treasurer of the Association of Towns of the State of New
York, a position he held for 27 years until his retirement in 2012; and
WHEREAS, In this capacity, Jeffrey Haber was a founder of the New York
Municipal Insurance Reciprocal (NYMIR) the largest property casualty
insurer of municipalities in New York State, and of the municipal work-
ers compensation alliance which provides coverage to municipalities in
the state; and
WHEREAS, Through his involvement in local government, Jeffrey Haber
served on many town, county and state commissions, task forces and
authorities, including the Town of Schodack Planning Board, Rensselaer
County IDA and Water and Sewer Authority and State Comptrollers Advisory
Council on the Retirement System; and
WHEREAS, He also served two terms as president of the National Associ-
ation of Towns and Townships (NATaT) and as president of the National
Center for Small Communities; and
WHEREAS, Jeffrey Haber is survived by his wife, Sandra (Laska), and
his children, Jeffrey D. (Karen) Haber, Lucas D. Haber and Samantha
(Rishi) Nangia; three grandchildren, Mason, Sagar and Shay Nangia, and
two stepchildren and their spouses, as well as four step-grandchildren;
and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Jeffrey Haber leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Jeffrey Haber, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Jeffrey G. Haber.
