LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Coach Charles Granby upon the occasion
of his retirement after 45 years of excellence in coaching and education
at Campus Magnet High School
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend notable
educators and athletic coaches who serve the youth of this great Empire
State and who have distinguished themselves and their schools through
outstanding commitment and exemplary athletic achievement; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
the significant milestones in the distinguished careers of those
outstanding educational leaders, whose dedication and achievements have
been instrumental in developing character and academic excellence in the
young people of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concerns, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Coach Charles Granby upon the occasion of his retirement after 45 years
of excellence in coaching and education at Campus Magnet High School;
his accomplishments will be celebrated at a party on April 26, 2014, at
Jericho Terrace, Mineola, New York; and
WHEREAS, Coach Charles "Chuck" Granby has been teaching and coaching
at Andrew Jackson High School, now called Campus Magnet High School, in
the Cambria Heights section of Queens, New York, since 1969; he retired
from teaching in 1996, but has continued to coach the Boys' Varsity
Basketball Team; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of his tenure at Andrew Jackson/Campus Magnet
High School, Coach Charles Granby's teams made the Public Schools
Athletic League (P.S.A.L.) playoffs 41 times, have won 24 division
titles, were quarter-finalists 19 times, Queens Champs seven years,
Semi-finalists six years, PSAL finalists four years, and earned a
P.S.A.L. New York City Championship Title in 1985; his teams never lost
a home game, have made the state tournament twice and, co-coaching with
Paul Brown, Coach Charles Granby has won eight straight gold medals at
the Empire State Open Men's Basketball Tournament; and
WHEREAS, Coach Charles Granby's extraordinary talents have made him
the "most winning" active coach in New York City; in 2011 he reached a
significant career milestone when he became the first and only coach in
the PSAL to obtain 700 wins, and his overall record is 717-213; and
WHEREAS, Coach Charles Granby has been named Newsday's Coach of the
Year six times, New York Daily News Coach of the Year five times, and
was named Coach of the Year by the NYSBA during the 1984-85 season; he
was inducted into the Brooklyn Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996, the New
York State Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005, and the New York City
Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he received the New York State Basketball Coach-
es Association recognition award in 1993, and received the Pro-Am
Achievement Award in 1997; and
WHEREAS, Charles Granby graduated from Bradley University in Peoria,
Illinois, and earned a Master of Arts degree from Hunter College, City
University of New York; while attending Bradley University, he played on
the basketball team which was ranked one, two or three from 1958 to
1961; and
WHEREAS, Charles Granby's sparkling success as a coach is a reflection
of his commitment to his players beyond basketball; with a reputation
for serving as mentor and father figure to the young men he instructs,
Coach Granby has been influential in the lives of many of his players,
stressing to them the value of education, helping them to attain full
scholarships to top colleges and universities, and motivating his
students to reach their fullest potential; and
WHEREAS, Coach Charles Granby is also highly regarded for his dedi-
cation to his community; for more than 40 years he has organized his
annual Thanksgiving Basketball Classic at York College in Queens, host-
ing many local high schools and inspiring many young athletes; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this unfaltering gentleman is a man of deep
faith; since 1976, he has been an active member of St. Albans Congrega-
tional Church, serving in the past as a member of the Men's Fellowship
and the Deacon Board, and now supporting many of the church's programs
and projects; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his daughter, Robyn, his older
brother, Samuel, and his younger sister, Catherine, all of whom feel
privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Educators like Coach Charles Granby provide a tremendous
service to the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of
young people in their educational journeys and ensuring their success in
their future years; and
WHEREAS, Coach Charles Granby has clearly had an enduring impact on
the youth of the Campus Magnet High School, as well as on the communi-
ty-at-large, and accordingly merits recognition and applause for his
impressive dedication to others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Coach Charles Granby upon the occasion of his retirement after 45
years of excellence in coaching and education at Campus Magnet High
School, and for his significant contributions to the uplift of youth in
New York State; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Coach Charles Granby.
