LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Comptroller Edward George upon the occa-
sion of his retirement after 35 years of distinguished service to the
City of Geneva

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and honor
those distinguished citizens of this great Empire State who have devoted
themselves to faithfully serving the best interests of their community
and the needs of its residents; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Comptroller Edward George upon the occasion of his retirement after 35
years of distinguished service to the City of Geneva; and
WHEREAS, He officially retired from his position as Comptroller on
Friday, January 3, 2014, and a reception was held in his honor at the
Knights of Columbus; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Geneva, New York, Edward George grew up as
the only child of Anna and Harry George; he graduated from Geneva High
in 1970; he went on to further his education and received a degree in
business administration from Alfred University in 1974; and
WHEREAS, After college, Edward George returned home and accepted a job
with the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, working part-time at
Finger Lakes Race Track in Farmington, New York, from 1975 until 1978;
and
WHEREAS, Wanting a full time position, Edward George applied for the
position of Deputy City Comptroller; subsequently, he was hired on
December 28, 1978, beginning his illustrious career with the City of
Geneva; George worked as Deputy Comptroller until being named Comp-
troller on April 10, 2010; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure, Edward George worked with or for six city
managers, four fire chiefs, three police chiefs and 11-12 mayors; he
helped the city manage its finances, but mostly enjoyed interacting with
the people who came to City Hall to pay their taxes, water and sewer
bills, or traffic tickets; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Edward George served with intelligence
and caring dedication, continuously striving to effectively fulfill the
duties of his position; and
WHEREAS, As Comptroller, Edward George knew a lot about municipal law;
he was successful in looking for a solution, rather than complain about
a problem; he leaves the City of Geneva in stable fiscal health, with
several years of the same tax rate, manageable debt, positive economic
development and city-sponsored programs such as the Lakefront Visitors
and Events Center; and
WHEREAS, Sincerely loved and greatly respected by all those with whom
he worked, Edward George will be remembered for his honesty, integrity,
keen sense of duty and ability to show a unique grasp of human problems
in his official acts; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Kathy, and their two
children, Michael and Kelly, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of
his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, In retirement, Edward George has plans to travel with his
wife, as well as volunteer at local nursing homes and assisted living
centers; realizing many residents have no one to visit them, volunteer-
ing provides a way in which the human values of community, caring and
serving can be sustained and strengthened, something he feels strongly
about which came from visiting his parents when they were in a nursing
home; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Edward George upon the occasion of his retirement, and to wish him
continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Edward George.
