LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Adrienne Garfinkel upon the occasion
of being named 2013 Woman of the Year by the Merrick Chamber of Commerce

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Adrienne Garfinkel has given not only of her time and ener-
gies but also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and conse-
quently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Adrienne
Garfinkel upon the occasion of being named 2013 Woman of the Year by the
Merrick Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, This momentous occasion will be celebrated in recognition of
Adrienne Garfinkel's lifetime of community service and activism, at the
Chamber's Installation Dinner on Thursday, January 23, 2014, at the
Chateau Briand in Carle Place, New York; and
WHEREAS, Adrienne Garfinkel, a retired elementary school teacher, is
at the center of Merrick's long-standing traditions; she and her husband
Larry, helped to found the Historical Society of the Merricks in 1975,
and continue to lead the organization today; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the Garfinkel's are in attendance each year for
the Historical Society's annual 4th of July celebratory public reading
of the Declaration of Independence in downtown Merrick; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the 1970's, Adrienne Garfinkel was dedicated to
ensuring that Merrick's history did not disappear; she participated in
an oral history project and recorded interviews with fellow Merokeans
that became part of Merrick Library's historical collection; and
WHEREAS, A lifetime PTA member, Adrienne Garfinkel received a Found-
er's Day Award from Birch School for her role in bringing cultural and
arts groups to the school; and
WHEREAS, In addition, each year she and her husband help organize the
Merrick Brotherhood Council's Thanksgiving Festival of Music, which
features musical performances by Merrick children, teenagers, and ensem-
bles from local houses of worship; and
WHEREAS, Adrienne Garfinkel has been called upon to contribute her
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Adrienne Garfinkel has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Larry, their three
sons, and four grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part
of her life and rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Adrienne Garfinkel has displayed
throughout her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Adrienne Garfinkel upon the occasion of being named 2013 Woman
of the Year by the Merrick Chamber of Commerce; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Adrienne Garfinkel.
