LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Sheriff John M. York upon the occasion
of his retirement after more than 40 years of distinguished service to
Livingston County
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and honor
those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote themselves to
public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence in providing
for the care and welfare of the citizens of their communities and this
great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their exem-
plary contributions and service on behalf of others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Sheriff John
M. York upon the occasion of his retirement after more than 40 years of
distinguished service to Livingston County; this momentous occasion was
recognized by the Livingston County Board of Supervisors at their final
meeting on Wednesday, December 18, 2013; and
WHEREAS, John M. York joined the Livingston County Sheriff's Office in
January of 1969 after an honorable discharge from the United States
Army; he officially retired from the esteemed position of Sheriff on
Tuesday, December 31, 2013; and
WHEREAS, First assigned to the Corrections and Communications Divi-
sion, John M. York was later promoted to Sergeant and then to Investi-
gator; in 1983, he was promoted to the rank of Major in charge of Oper-
ations of the Criminal Investigations Division, Juvenile Aid and the
Identification Division; and
WHEREAS, Elected Sheriff in 1989, John M. York attended Monroe Commu-
nity College, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and numerous police
management, investigation and corrections schools; and
WHEREAS, After more than four decades of dedication to law enforce-
ment, John M. York significantly contributed to the development of the
county's 911 Emergency Center, county jail, and accreditation of the
sheriff's office; Livingston County Sheriff's Office was the first in
the State of New York to have gained accreditation for every division of
the agency; and
WHEREAS, A true pioneer in the war against drugs, John M. York was
instrumental in establishing drug awareness programs as early as 1972;
he is past President of the New York State Sheriff's Association, and
currently serves as Chairman of the Association's Executive Committee;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those dedicated
public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the preservation
of order and the protection of others are worthy and due full praise for
their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Sheriff John M. York upon the occasion of his retirement after
more than 40 years of distinguished service to Livingston County; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sheriff John M. York.
