LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 125th Anniversary of the Webb
Institute to be celebrated on May 17, 2014
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishment clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in the education of the Empire State; and
WHEREAS, It is the further sense of this Legislative Body to commend
the efforts of those institutions of higher education which aim to
improve the futures of our students by instilling in them the values of
responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
125th Anniversary of the founding of Webb Institute to be celebrated on
May 17, 2014, as part of this year's Homecoming Day events; and
WHEREAS, Homecoming Day will mark the culmination of an exciting year
of regional events honoring both the founder, William H. Webb; and the
history of Webb Institute; and
WHEREAS, Since 1889, Webb Institute has been committed to excellence
in maritime education, fostering the next generation of our Nation's
naval architects and marine engineers; and
WHEREAS, Webb Institute was founded on April 2, 1889, by William H.
Webb, a preeminent shipbuilder, entrepreneur, and philanthropist of the
19th Century; and
WHEREAS, Webb Institute was originally located in Fordham Heights in
the Bronx, New York; since 1947, the institute has been located on the
grounds of the former Herbert L. Pratt estate, "The Braes," in Glen
Cove, on Long Island Sound; and
WHEREAS, Since its founding, Webb Institute has focused on a single
four year course of study which, upon successful completion of the
required coursework and practical work experience in the marine indus-
try, awards a double major in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering;
and
WHEREAS, Webb Institute continues to provide a world-class undergradu-
ate engineering education, while remaining the only private institution
in the country to provide full-tuition scholarships to all enrollees;
and
WHEREAS, The Webb Institute Alumni Association is perennially amongst
the very top schools in the country for the percentage of alumni
contributions; and
WHEREAS, Webb Institute is the oldest school of Naval Architecture and
Marine Engineering in the country; and
WHEREAS, Graduates of Webb Institute have consistently been in the
forefront of the development of all ship types, including merchant
vessels, naval surface combatants, aircraft carriers, auxiliaries,
submarines, hydrofoils, surface effect ships, as well as many examples
of workboats and pleasure craft of all types; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous direction of President R. Keith Michel,
the Webb Institute School has been an integral part of the history of
its community, representing a dynamic, responsive and positive force
within the educational system of New York State; and
WHEREAS, With great admiration, this Legislative Body is proud to pay
tribute to this eminent institution which stands at the threshold of the
future with its legacy of outstanding achievements and its impressive
body of distinguished alumni; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations, to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the founding of the Webb Institute
on May 17, 2014, and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be presented, suitably
engrossed, to R. Keith Michel, President of Webb Institute.
