LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION celebrating the 60-year career of modern artist
Colin Greenly upon the occasion of the opening of his exhibit, "60 Years
of Seeing," at SUNY Orange, on January 13, 2014
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those individuals of historic and artistic significance whose creative
talents have contributed to the cultural enrichment of our communities
and our Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body celebrates the 60-year career
of modern artist Colin Greenly upon the occasion of the opening of his
exhibit, "60 Years of Seeing," at SUNY Orange's Mindy Ross Gallery,
Newburgh, New York; this superb sampling of the artist's work will be on
display January 13 through March 14, 2014; and
WHEREAS, A resident of the Town of Hamptonburgh, Colin Greenly has
been visually exploring the energies of nature and personal existence
and interpreting them via various conventional and unconventional art
materials for more than 60 years; and
WHEREAS, The works on display at the exhibit provide a glimpse of the
command of the tools and language of art, as well as the philosophical
and visual inspiration that have developed Colin Greenly's way of look-
ing at the world and imagination during his long career; and
WHEREAS, Colin Greenly earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard
University, and began sampling various careers while living and working
in New York City; and
WHEREAS, His artistic path was charted when, after a meeting with the
chairman of the Columbia University School of Painting and Sculpture, he
enrolled in an undergraduate course in 'Seeing' that emphasized the
development and powers of observation fundamental to the study of art;
he went on to take advantage of other painting and sculpture courses
offered by practicing artists at Columbia University; and
WHEREAS, The "60 Years of Seeing" exhibit in the Mindy Ross Gallery is
comprised of small-scale models of sculpture, images of large-scale
sculpture, multi-piece digital assemblages, and drawings; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Colin Greenly's work has been displayed
in numerous major museums and galleries in the United States including
the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian America Art Museum, the Whit-
ney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the
Corcoran Gallery of Art; and
WHEREAS, Colin Greenly is an artist of national renown; he won a
national competition for playground sculpture, and has received large-
scale commissions, as well as both state and national grants, including
a National Endowment Grant; his work was recently represented in the
book, "Growing by Design 1900-2000, Century of the Child"; and
WHEREAS, It is most fitting that we take time to celebrate the arts of
our Nation, to honor our artists, and to express our appreciation to
everyone who patronizes the arts; and as we celebrate the arts, we cele-
brate and give thanks to our American freedom, the only atmosphere in
which artists can truly create and in which art is truly the expression
of the soul; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the 60-year career of modem artist Colin Greenly upon the
occasion of the opening of his exhibit, "60 Years of Seeing," at SUNY
Orange; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Colin Greenly.
