LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of George Maney, former Fire
Chief, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, George Maney of Johnson City, New York, died on Sunday,
December 15, 2013, at the age of 72; and
WHEREAS, George Maney was born on November 14, 1941, to John and Mary
(Hiovich) Maney; he was a lifetime member of St. James Church in Johnson
City, New York; and
WHEREAS, George Maney distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, George Maney's illustrious career as a firefighter spanned
over 37 years with the Johnson City Fire Department, 15 of those years
serving as its Chief; he officially retired in July of 2001; and
WHEREAS, He also served as President of the New York State Association
of Fire Chiefs, Chairman of the New York State Department of State -
Division of Building Standards and Codes, and served on the New York
State Codes Council Fire Sub-Committee; and
WHEREAS, George Maney was a member of New York State Building Offi-
cials, Career Fire Chiefs New York State, International Codes Council,
International Association of Fire Chiefs, former member of Choconut
Center Volunteer Fire Department, member of the Johnson City Knights of
Columbus No. 2953, and a volunteer for the BC Open/Dicks Open Golf Tour-
nament; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his duties as Fire Chief, George Maney spent
many years as Building Inspector for the Village of Johnson City; in
that capacity, he helped many owners navigate the requirements for open-
ing their new businesses; and
WHEREAS, George Maney is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bonnie
(Palmer) Maney; his four children, Karin Maney, Michael (Sarah) Maney,
Gregory (Amy) Maney, and Kathleen (Luke) St. John; and his four grand-
children, Noah, Michael, Leah, and Henry; as well as a large extended
family; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man stood head and shoulders above other men,
and was known for his absolute honesty and integrity; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, George Maney leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of George Maney, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of George Maney.
