LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Barbara Corker, President of the Sons of
the American Legion Department upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by the Sullivan County American Legion on March 16,
2014
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Barbara Cork-
er, President of the Sons of the American Legion Department upon the
occasion of her designation for special recognition by the Sullivan
County American Legion to be celebrated at its annual dinner on Sunday,
March 16, 2014, at the Eagles Nest in Bloomingburg, New York; and
WHEREAS, Chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic
veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness, the American Legion
is the nation's largest wartime veterans service organization, committed
to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communi-
ties, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national securi-
ty, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans;
and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Bronx, New York, Barbara Corker has been a
dedicated member of The Throggs Neck Memorial Unit No. 1456; she is the
first Auxiliary member from Bronx County to be elected to the high
office of President of the Sons of the American Legion Department; and
WHEREAS, She has served her community for several years as a member of
the New York Police Department Precinct Council (NYPD), the Parent
Teacher Association, the Throggs Neck United Veteran's Day Parade
Committee, and the Throggs Neck Community Board; and
WHEREAS, From 1988 through 1995, Barbara Corker worked for the Parkch-
ester South Condominium as both a supervisor and a secretary to the
President of the Board of Directors; for the next seven years, she was
employed by the NYPD where she performed administrative secretarial
duties, and currently, is a Real Estate Associate in Dutchess County;
and
WHEREAS, As President of the Department, Barbara Corker was responsi-
ble for revitalizing the Junior Auxiliary in her unit; she was a member
for several terms on the Finance Committee and Executive Board, serving
as Secretary, Children and Youth Chairman, Membership Chairman, Sergeant
at Arms and Constitution and By-Laws Chairman for the Unit; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Corker was Unit President for four terms and is
currently a member of the Finance and Audit Committee; furthermore, she
served as chairman for several fundraisers on the unit level; and
WHEREAS, At the County level, Barbara Corker has, in the past served
on all major committees, was the County President for two terms, and
assisted with the Holiday Gift Shop; today, she is the County Education
Chairman and a member of the Finance and Audit Committee; and
WHEREAS, At the District and Department level, Barbara Corker served
as First District Vice President for three terms; subsequently, she
received the Helen Klimek Gavel for Membership and had the honor of
being a Department Page at the 2008 National Convention; and
WHEREAS, A certified Leadership Instructor, Barbara has devoted much
of her time as Department Chairman for Cancer Awareness, Education,
National Security, Veteran's Affairs and Rehabilitation, Children and
Youth, and Membership Chairman; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband of 34 years, James
Corker, and their two children, as well as their two granddaughters, all
of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and rejoice in her
achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Barbara Corker, President of the Sons of the American Legion
Department upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition
by the Sullivan County American Legion on March 16, 2014; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Department President Barbara Corker, Sons of the American
Legion.
