LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Norman Duttweiler upon the occasion of
his retirement as Producing Director of the Forestburgh Playhouse after
22 years of dedicated service
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor and pay trib-
ute to organizations and individuals whose commitment and creative
talents contribute to the cultural enrichment, education and enter-
tainment of their community and the State of New York and beyond; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Norman Duttweiler upon the occasion of his retirement as Producing
Director of the Forestburgh Playhouse after 22 years of dedicated
service; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1947, Forestburgh Playhouse is the oldest contin-
uously operating professional summer theatre in New York State, and is
the cornerstone of the rich heritage in Sullivan County; and
WHEREAS, Norman Duttweiler began his illustrious career in theater as
an actor at the Surflight Summer Theatre; he subsequently appeared in
stock and regional productions, as well as on Broadway in the long
running revival of "Oh! Calcutta!"; and
WHEREAS, In addition, his appearance as Jackie Manchester in the Rich-
ard Benner film "Too Outrageous", earned him rave reviews in the NEW
YORK POST; and
WHEREAS, In the 1980s, Norman Duttweiler took a hiatus from the thea-
ter, during which time he earned an MBA from the Stern School at New
York University, and a Wall Street career as Director of Information
Systems for one of the most prestigious law firms; and
WHEREAS, Norman Duttweiler has been Producing Director at Forestburgh
Playhouse since he opened the 45th Anniversary season of the Playhouse
on June 16, 1992; over the past 22 years, he has presented more than 200
productions; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, Norman Duttweiler focused on increas-
ing the subscriber base, improving the quality of the product, repairing
and renovating the physical plant, and building the quality and morale
of the staff, all of which has led to the continued success of Forest-
burgh Playhouse; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, he developed children's theater and workshops,
and established the non-profit Forestburgh Theatre Arts Center to admin-
ister the day-to-day operations of the venue; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous direction of Norman Duttweiler, Forest-
burgh Playhouse has continued to offer its own unique version of summer
theatre to audiences of Sullivan County; and
WHEREAS, The arts are the building blocks of civilization, they are
central to human expression; they enlighten us and inspire the imagina-
tion; individuals and organizations which further such worthy purposes
richly merit the recognition and appreciation of this Legislative Body
and the people of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Norman Duttweiler upon the occasion of his retirement as Producing
Director of the Forestburgh Playhouse after 22 years of dedicated
service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Norman Duttweiler.
