LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Althea Geer upon the occasion of
celebrating her 100th Birthday

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is proud to congratulate
Althea Geer upon the occasion of celebrating her 100th Birthday; she
commemorated this joyous event by hosting an Open House in her family
home on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, in Downsville, New York; and
WHEREAS, Althea Geer was born on February 12, 1914, the youngest of
four sisters; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of the Hamlet of Downsville, Althea Geer
has been part of the tremendous social, technological and economical
changes affecting her community over the past 100 years, changes that
reflect the history of New York State; and
WHEREAS, When the Downsville Dam was being constructed, Althea Geer
worked at Dr. White's Pharmacy, where she ran the soda fountain and made
ice cream sundaes; and
WHEREAS, Althea Geer attended elementary school at what is now the Old
Schoolhouse Inn restaurant; while enrolled as a student at the Downs-
ville Central School, she played forward on the girls' basketball team,
the only sport offered to girls at the time; and
WHEREAS, During World War II, Althea Geer's husband, the late George
Geer, was a member of the United States Army; she was fortunate to have
him return home safely after the war, despite being injured, while many
of her peers lost the significant men in their lives; and
WHEREAS, Althea Geer, her husband, and their young son lived in down-
town Downsville during the construction of the Pepacton Reservoir; her
son is now 66 years old; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, A lover of baseball, Althea Geer is a fan of the New York
Mets and continues to listen to, watch and follow the team; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, This beloved woman has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Althea Geer upon the occasion of her 100th Birthday; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Althea Geer.
