LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION celebrating the 88th Anniversary of the Hinsdale
Volunteer Fire Company

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
invaluable organizations and institutions that exist to serve and
protect the citizens of our communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body hereby recognizes the Hins-
dale Volunteer Fire Company upon the occasion of its 88th Anniversary;
and
WHEREAS, Volunteer fire departments are an integral part of community
protection in localities across this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, For the past 88 years, the courageous and dedicated fire-
fighters of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Company have valiantly devoted
their time to respond to various fire emergencies, while earning the
praise and respect of the community they serve; and
WHEREAS, The Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Company held its first organiza-
tional meeting in July of 1926, at the Pitcher Hill School; and
WHEREAS, By August of 1926, the first officers were elected to head
the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Company; Frank Edwards was elected to serve
as the first chief and William Stager was elected to serve as the first
assistant chief; and
WHEREAS, In 1928, a firehouse was built for the Hinsdale Volunteer
Fire Company at 113 Malden Road to house the department's first fire
truck, a 1929 Chevrolet with two foamite tanks and 200 feet of one inch
hose; a Dodge pumper was purchased in 1947; and
WHEREAS, By 1974, the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Company had expanded
greatly, purchasing two new fully equipped rescue trucks, acquiring new
pumpers and tankers, and upgrading to the new firehouse, which was
completed in 1966; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its rich history, the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire
Company has had the consistent support of its Women's Auxiliary, which
was also founded in July of 1926; and
WHEREAS, On January 25, 2014, the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Company
marked an important event in history when it installed its first-ever
female fire chief, Michelle Culkin, who has long served as the depart-
ment's assistant fire chief; and
WHEREAS, Each day, the brave members of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire
Company prepare to risk their lives in order to selflessly protect the
life and property of all those living within their community; and
WHEREAS, The State of New York cannot express sufficient gratitude to
all of those trained and devoted individuals who serve and protect their
communities through volunteer fire departments across this great Empire
State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the 88th Anniversary of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Company;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Michelle Culkin, Fire Chief, Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Company.
