LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Adele U. Trapp upon the occasion
of her 100th Birthday on February 26, 2014

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Adele
U. Trapp upon the occasion of her 100th Birthday celebrated Saturday,
February 22, 2014, with a party held in her honor at St. Philip's Epis-
copal Church, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Adele U. Trapp was born on February 26, 1914, in Barbados,
West Indies, and has called Brooklyn, New York, home since 1922; she
attended Bedford-Stuyvesant's P.S. 3 and Prospect Heights' Girls Commer-
cial High School, later renamed Prospect Heights High School; and
WHEREAS, Adele U. Trapp was a founding member of the Board of St.
Mark's Day School, Brooklyn, and is retired from the New York City
Department of Education, where she received a Quality of Work Life
Program Award in the Department of Education for 30 years of dedicated
service; and
WHEREAS, At the time of her retirement, Adele U. Trapp was the oldest
worker in the Department of Education; she had previously retired from
the New York City Transit Authority in 1976, where she served as Secre-
tary to the Comptroller; and
WHEREAS, For 57 years, Adele U. Trapp served as Den Mother to Cub Pack
263 of the Greater New York Council of Boy Scouts of America located at
St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, She received many awards for her work in Scouting and in
2011, her accomplishments were published worldwide in 28 languages in
the Guinness Book of World Records, setting a new record as the Longest
Serving Cub Scout Den Mother; and
WHEREAS, Adele U. Trapp has been a member of Bedford-Stuyvesant
Brooklyn's historic St. Philip's Episcopal Church since 1945; and
WHEREAS, She is a proud recipient of the Service to Church and Commu-
nity Award from St. Matthew's Deanery, and the Church's highest honor
for laity in a diocese, the Bishop's Medal for Distinguished Parochial
Service; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Adele U. Trapp is a member of DC 37, as well as
a Union shop steward; and a Block Association President and member of
United Coalition of Block Associations (UCOBA); and
WHEREAS, Adele U. Trapp has been honored by the City Council for her
dedication to her community; received a Citation of Honor for being an
Extraordinary Elder; was presented with a Brooklyn Women Change Ameri-
ca-Magnificent Dozen Award; and has been honored in the past by the
Crown Heights Lions Club and the Brooklyn Old Timers Foundation, Inc.;
and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, This beloved woman has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome

achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Adele U. Trapp upon the occasion of celebrating her 100th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Adele U. Trapp.
