LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Eagle Academy for Young Men of South-
east Queens upon the occasion of hosting a screening of American Prom-
ise, on March 1, 2014
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those organizations of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishment clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in the education of the youth of the Empire State;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Eagle Academy for Young Men of Southeast Queens upon the occasion of
hosting a screening of the film, AMERICAN PROMISE, on Saturday, March 1,
2014; and
WHEREAS, The Eagle Academy Foundation empowers at-risk inner city
young men to become academic achievers, engaged citizens, and responsi-
ble men by providing quality education resources and proven effective
community-based initiatives to address the shortfalls in public educa-
tion to effectively educate them; and
WHEREAS, The Eagle Academy Foundation develops and supports a network
of all male, grades 6 through 12, college-preparatory schools in chal-
lenged, urban communities that educate and mentor young men into future
leaders committed to excellence in character, scholastic achievement and
community service, and to promote these principles nationally; and
WHEREAS, Eagle Academy for Young Men of Southeast Queens opened in
September 2010 with approximately 85 sixth grade students, and plans to
add each year until it becomes a full academy in Fall 2016; the school
maintained a 95.6% attendance rate in the 2010-2011 school year, and
received more than 1500 applications for 84 sixth grade slots in Septem-
ber 2011; and
WHEREAS, Today Eagle Academy for Young Men of Southeast Queens has
approximately 250 students in grades six through nine; and
WHEREAS, AMERICAN PROMISE is a documentary that follows the 12-year
journey of two African-American families pursuing the promise of oppor-
tunity through the education of their sons; the film took 13 years to
make, and seeks to empower boys, their parents, caregivers, and educa-
tors to help close the Black male achievement gap; and
WHEREAS, In showing AMERICAN PROMISE, Eagle Academy for Young Men of
Southeast Queens demonstrates its deep commitment to not only educating
the young men in its charge, but engaging the entire community in impor-
tant conversations about our education system, our children, and our
society; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize Eagle
Academy for Young Men of Southeast Queens, noting the importance of its
work and its worthy commitment to the youth of New York State; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Eagle Academy for Young Men of Southeast Queens upon the occa-
sion of hosting a screening of American Promise; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Eagle Academy for Young Men of Southeast Queens.
