LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Roland Gray upon his selection as
an inductee into the Inaugural SUNY Sullivan Generals Athletics Hall of
Fame
WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved
only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit, nurtured by
dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical develop-
ment of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success and developing a sense of
fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Roland
Gray upon his selection as an inductee into the Inaugural SUNY Sullivan
Generals Athletics Hall of Fame to be celebrated at a reception with
President, Dr. Karin Hilgersom, on Friday, March 14, 2014, in the Harold
L. Gold Founders Hall Lobby of SUNY Sullivan in Loch Sheldrake, New
York; and
WHEREAS, During this year's NJCAA DIII Men's Basketball National Cham-
pionship Tournament, SUNY Sullivan will be opening the SUNY Sullivan
Generals Athletic Hall of Fame; with its 50th Anniversary as a fitting
platform, the college will induct its first class representing athletes
and boosters from the college's five decades; the Hall of Fame will be
housed in the College's Paul Gerry Fieldhouse; and
WHEREAS, Roland "Rollie" Gray was the first Director of Athletics in
the history of SUNY Sullivan County Community College, serving from
1964-1977; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man created the College's first intercollegiate
Men's Basketball and Baseball programs and served as Head Coach for both
sports; and
WHEREAS, Roland Gray's unique vision set the standard for SUNY Sulli-
van Generals Athletics that is still followed today; and
WHEREAS, Under Roland Gray's administration, the College's Fieldhouse,
one of the largest athletic venues in the tri-county area, was opened in
1974; and
WHEREAS, SUNY Sullivan's strong athletic program is a point of pride
at the college and reflects its commitment to sportsmanship, academics,
and the positive growth of student athletes in its community; and
WHEREAS, Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride and
accomplishment, and Roland Gray has clearly made a contribution to the
spirit of excellence which is a tradition of their school; now, there-
fore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Roland Gray upon his selection as an inductee into the
Inaugural SUNY Sullivan Generals Athletics Hall of Fame; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Roland Gray.
