LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Patrick I. Borgen upon the occasion
of his designation for special recognition by the Brooklyn Housing and
Family Services on June 19, 2014

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lives, personal endeavors,
and community service are an example and inspiration to their
colleagues, friends, family, and community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Patrick I. Borgen upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Brooklyn Housing and Family Services, to be cele-
brated at its Annual Carole Jayson Memorial Dinner, on Thursday, June
19, 2014, at Rex Manor Catering Hall in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Brooklyn Housing and Family Services has diligently
served the communities of Central Brooklyn since 1971, and through its
Tenant Committees, has successfully initiated building improvements and
combated the deterioration of housing in its Borough; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Patrick I. Borgen earned a BS Magna Cum Laude in Biomedi-
cal Engineering at Tulane, and his MD at Louisiana State University; his
post-doctoral work includes internship and residency at Ochsner Medical
Institutions, where he was chief resident, and a clinical research
fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he received management training in the Program
for Chiefs of Clinical Services at the Harvard School of Public Health;
and
WHEREAS, Chairman of Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn,
New York, Dr. Patrick I. Borgen heads the Breast Center at the newly
built Maimonides Cancer Center; and
WHEREAS, Prior to his time at Maimonides Medical Center, Dr. Patrick
I. Borgen was Chief, Breast Service; Head, Breast Cancer Research Labo-
ratory; and Director, Breast Cancer Disease Management Team at Memorial
Sloan Kettering; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Patrick I. Borgen has received numerous research grants
from the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society, the
United States Army and the National Cancer Institute; he is widely
published in peer-reviewed publications, and is on the Editorial Board
of ANNALS OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY and the Peer Review Board of THE JOURNAL
OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (JAMA); and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, he is editor of three major textbooks on breast
disease, and has contributed chapters to 15 other texts; to date, he has
published 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 141 abstracts and 15
editorials; and
WHEREAS, An avid volunteer, Dr. Patrick I. Borgen is currently on the
Executive Boards of the Breast Cancer Alliance, Inc. and Tulane Univer-
sity, as well as a member of the American Joint Committee on Cancer,
Breast Task Force; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his professional and communi-
ty service, a period of constructive involvement, Dr. Patrick I. Borgen
has stood constant in dignity, good grace, and humor and has earned the
respect and admiration of his colleagues, family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which Dr. Patrick I. Borgen has displayed
throughout his life; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That is Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor
Dr. Patrick I. Borgen upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Brooklyn Housing and Family Services on June 19,
2014; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Patrick I. Borgen.
