LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending BRIC upon the occasion of hosting its
Celebrate Brooklyn! Opening Night Gala and Concert on Wednesday, June 4,
2014
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body recognizes the importance of the perform-
ing arts, which act to inspire, enlighten, and unify people from all
cultural backgrounds through the transcendent power of human expression;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
BRIC upon the occasion of hosting its Celebrate Brooklyn! Gala on
Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn, New
York; and
WHEREAS, During this special event, BRIC will pay special recognition
to Kenneth Adams, President and CEO of Empire State Development, for his
tremendous contributions to the Brooklyn community; in addition, a
performance will be held by multi-talented recording artist Janelle
Monae; and
WHEREAS, From its inception in 1979, Brooklyn Information and Culture
(BRIC) has been the driving force behind a number of Brooklyn's most
widely renowned and beloved arts and media programs; it has greatly
enriched the cultural landscape by presenting, producing and enabling a
wide array of quality visual, performing and media arts programs; and
WHEREAS, BRIC advances access to understanding of arts and media by
presenting free and low-cost programming, and by offering education and
other public programs to people of all ages; these programs aid in the
expansion of remarkable events for the public within Brooklyn and
throughout New York City; and
WHEREAS, As a non-profit arts organization it has been a leader in
innovation in the arts and media, a proud participant in the revitaliza-
tion of Prospect Park; it is a champion of arts education through its
programs: in media, Brooklyn Community Access Television; in the
performing arts, BRIC studio and the Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival; and
in visual arts, the BRIC Rotunda Gallery; and
WHEREAS, Over its 35 year history, the Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival
has presented over 2,000 artists and ensembles reflective of the
borough's diversity, ranging from internationally acclaimed performers
to emerging, cutting-edge artists; all Celebrate Brooklyn! performances
are free and the festival attracts upwards of 250,000 attendees from
across New York City to the Prospect Park Bandshell each summer; and
WHEREAS, In the borough that is now one of this country's foremost
creative centers, BRIC is unparalleled in its combination of artistic
excellence, programmatic breadth and genuine accessibility; and
WHEREAS, Combined, BRIC's programs reach upwards of a million Brooklyn
residents each year with compelling and engaging visual arts, performing
arts and media; individuals, nonprofits, community groups, school chil-
dren, educators and artists borough-wide, all benefit from its highly
accessible exhibitions, performances, television programs, and education
programs as well as the subsidized platforms it offers for artists and
community members to develop and present works; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those organizations whose myriad contributions add brilliance, vigor and
inspiration to the cultural diversity and quality of life in the commu-
nities across the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend BRIC upon the occasion of hosting its Celebrate Brooklyn! Gala
on Wednesday, June 4, 2014; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Leslie G. Schultz, President, BRIC.
