LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending United States Navy Captain Christopher
Brunett upon the occasion of taking command of the USS New York, on
February 14, 2014
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of esteemed resi-
dents of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
United States Navy Captain Christopher Brunett upon the occasion of
taking command of the USS New York; the change of command ceremony was
held on Friday, February 14, 2014, in Jacksonville, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Captain Christopher Brunett is the fourth commanding officer
of the USS New York, an amphibious transport dock designed to transport
and land troops in a war zone; and
WHEREAS, A native of Buffalo, New York, Captain Christopher Brunett
attended Amherst High School, and graduated from the United States Naval
Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, in 1989; and
WHEREAS, Captain Christopher Brunett was designated a naval aviator in
1991; his previous assignments range from Helicopter Combat Support
Squadron Eight, to commander of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25; and
WHEREAS, Immediately prior to assuming the commanding officer posi-
tion, Captain Christopher Brunett served as the USS New York's executive
officer for 18 months; and
WHEREAS, The USS New York is named after the State of New York; one of
the most technologically advanced warships in the world, it is also a
floating memorial as 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center was
forged directly into the ship's bow during its construction, fueling the
fire of resolve that powers the USS New York's commanding officer and
crew to continue to stand watch over this great nation; and
WHEREAS, Captain Christopher Brunett and the USS New York will be
deployed to the Middle East and the Mediterranean area for approximately
eight months; and
WHEREAS, This courageous naval officer is proud to take command of the
USS New York, and as a Buffalonian and a New Yorker, feels blessed to be
part of its crew; he will enforce the ship's operational and warfare
readiness; and
WHEREAS, In his free time, Captain Christopher Brunett enjoys spending
time with his family, competing in triathlons, and taking runs with his
dog; and
WHEREAS, Individuals who dedicate their lives to military service
merit the commendation and applause of all citizens for their commitment
to the preservation of American freedom; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that individuals who
make tremendous sacrifices to ensure the security of our State and
nation should be celebrated for their noble efforts on behalf of others;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend United States Navy Captain Christopher Brunett upon the occasion
of taking command of the USS New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Captain Christopher Brunett.
