LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Dr. Muriel Johnson Provi-
dence, distinguished citizen and devoted member of her community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence of Queens, New York died on
Sunday, March 2, 2014 at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence distinguished herself in her
profession and by her sincere dedication and substantial contribution to
the welfare of her community; and
WHEREAS, Pastor of the New Covenant Church of Christ in Queens
Village, New York, Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence was ordained in 1983;
since her first message to the Sunday School of the Bethany Baptist
Church, she was a true pioneer in bringing a wealth of experience to
ministry; and
WHEREAS, The academic background of Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence
encompasses a wide range of degrees and diplomas from several insti-
tutions including, Pennsylvania Business College, Beaver College,
Wesleyan University, and Virginia Seminary and College where she served
as a trustee on the Board of Managers; and
WHEREAS, Co-Pastor of New Covenant Church of Christ since 1991, and
Pastor since 1999, Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence was instrumental in
organizing: Boy Scouts; Girl Scouts; performing arts; church social
work; praise dancers; steppers; E.L. Johnson Scholarship Fund; senior
activity; Charm School; Library, Business and Professional Unit; and
Memorial Gardens; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, she was the Founder of Mission on Wheels, an
organization which brings clothes, food, Bibles, and hope to the help-
less and hopeless; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence's commitment to excellence, and
her spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise,
including charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Active within her community, Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence
was the past President of the International Association of Ministers'
Wives which experienced phenomenal growth under her leadership, going
from 20 denominations to 70 denominations, from 13 states to 33 states,
and from a national body to an international body, embracing five conti-
nents; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence was a life member of NAACP,
Girl Scouts, and the International Academy of Poets and World Literary
Society; she was also a member of the Queens College People to People
project to bring racial harmony to the community; and
WHEREAS, In addition, she served with the Baptist Ministers' Confer-
ence of New York & Vicinity, as well as Queens Conference, Hampton
Ministers' Conference, and was a member of the Queens Federation of
Churches; and
WHEREAS, Amongst her greatest accomplishments, Dr. Muriel Johnson
Providence was the proud recipient of more than 60 plaques and awards,
and is listed in WHO'S WHO OF THE WOMEN OF THE WORLD; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence is survived by her husband,
Reverend Alvin C. Providence, Pastor of Zion Evangelical Baptist Church,
New Rochelle, New York; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Dr. Muriel Johnson Provi-
dence leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time
and will remain as a comforting memory to all she served and befriended;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence, distinguished citizen
and devoted member of her community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence.
