LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Kenan Cabuk upon the occasion of being
named a Finalist in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend and pay
tribute to those young people who, by achieving outstanding success in
educational competition, have inspired and brought pride to our majestic
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Son of Harry and Konan Cabuk, Kenan Cabuk is a member of
Student Voice, National Honor Society and National Foreign Language
Honor Society; and
WHEREAS, The National Merit Scholarship Program, one of the most pres-
tigious academic recognition programs in the Nation, was established in
1955 and recognizes through rigorous competitive examinations, those
students across the country who demonstrate exceptional academic abili-
ty; and
WHEREAS, Kenan Cabuk, a senior at Goshen High School, is among the
group of Finalists in the 59th Annual National Merit Scholarship
Program; his academic accomplishments have afforded him an opportunity
to continue in the competition for a National Merit Scholarship that
will be offered in the spring of 2014; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 1.5 million juniors from 22,000 high schools
entered the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2012
Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test; the nation-
wide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of
United States high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants
in each state; and
WHEREAS, To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding
academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by
the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the
student's earlier performance on the qualifying test; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the Semifinalist and a high school official must
submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student's
essay and information about the Semifinalist's participation and leader-
ship in both school and community activities; and
WHEREAS, Nearly 15,000 Semifinalists advance to the Finalist Level,
and it is from this group that all National Merit Scholarship winners
will be chosen on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and poten-
tial for success in rigorous college studies; and
WHEREAS, Kenan Cabuk, in achieving this high academic honor, may take
just pride in the inspiration and contribution to the spirit of excel-
lence he brings to his family, friends, community and school, Goshen
High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Kenan Cabuk upon the occasion of being named a Finalist in the
2014 National Merit Scholarship Program and to extend to him, best wish-
es for a future of purposeful success and well-being; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kenan Cabuk.
