LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Catherine Harkin upon the occasion of
her designation as Deputy Grand Marshal of the Annual Bay Ridge St.
Patrick's Day Parade on March 23, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those distinguished citizens of the State of New York who
devote their lifework and civic endeavor in service to their community,
adding to the character and quality of life for all citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Catherine Harkin upon the occasion of her designation as Deputy Grand
Marshal of the Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday,
March 23, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised on Ovington Avenue in Bay Ridge with her
roots going back to Tipperary, Ireland, Catherine Harkin attended Our
Lady of Angels before graduating from St. Joseph's High School; and
WHEREAS, Catherine Harkin began her illustrious 30 year career with
Merrill Lynch as a clerk; she worked her way up the ranks to Floor
Broker and Manager of The American Stock Exchange for Merrill where she
was a member of The Disciplinary Committee and was a Floor Official; and
WHEREAS, Catherine Harkin's three sons attended St. Ephrems School,
where she was active on numerous committees some of which include, the
Basketball Committee, Golf Committee, and the Bay Ridge St. Patrick's
Day Parade Party Committee; and
WHEREAS, In addition, she was a member of Sheridan Council Knights of
Columbus, serving in many capacities including President of The Ladies
Auxiliary where she was instrumental in the support of charities such as
the OLPH Food Pantry, The Guild for Exceptional Children and Unborn Baby
Love; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her partner, Bill, his children
Billy and Rachel, her three sons, Brendan (Bridget), Patrick and James,
as well as her two grandchildren, Jack and Clare, all of whom feel priv-
ileged to be a part of her life and rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, Catherine Harkin is a fitting choice for Deputy Grand Marshal
of the Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade, for she embodies the spirit
and the cherished ideals and values of this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, St. Patrick's Day is a time for people of all nationalities
and generations to assemble and celebrate the rich culture and heritage
of the Irish people throughout these United States; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day Parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and highlights the many
contributions and historical accomplishments of the Irish community in
this diverse land; and
WHEREAS, Catherine Harkin will be marching this year as a most grate-
ful and proud Deputy Grand Marshal in loving memory of her mother,
Winnie Maley, who was truly a living example of friendship, love and
loyalty; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Catherine Harkin upon the occasion of her designation as Deputy
Grand Marshal of the Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade on March
23, 2014; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Catherine Harkin.
