LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Susan de Sciora upon the occasion of her
retirement after 28 years of distinguished service as Director of
Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor Susan de
Sciora upon the occasion of her retirement after 28 years of distin-
guished service as Director of Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library; she will
officially retire on March 30, 2014; and
WHEREAS, A native of Brooklyn, Susan de Sciora was a Page in the West
Hempstead Public Library when she was a student at Molloy College in
1964; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Molloy, Susan de Sciora earned a
master's in library science from Long Island University; and
WHEREAS, She then moved from West Hempstead's Library to Levittown
Library in 1969, where she worked for 17 years, including as assistant
director, before she became a valued member of the Hewlett-Woodmere
Public Library staff in 1986; in 1983, she added a master's degree in
business administration to her noteworthy resume; and
WHEREAS, Susan de Sciora's illustrious library career spans 46 years,
including nearly 28 years at Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library where she
oversaw the library's most recent renovation; the introduction of a wide
range of technology for patron use, such as free Wi-Fi and online
services; a significant expansion of cultural activities; and making the
facility available to a variety of local organizations for meetings; and
WHEREAS, Susan de Sciora has rendered exemplary, faithful, conscien-
tious and valuable service to Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library and the
community it serves; and
WHEREAS, In her official acts, Susan de Sciora has been governed by a
keen sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems,
earning the admiration, esteem and affection of her colleagues; and
WHEREAS, Putting together a qualified staff and reaching out to the
community are two things Susan de Sciora did to help ensure her success;
when the library began looking into doing renovations, she created a
Building Advisory Committee and established a Parents Advisory Commit-
tee; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Ed, and their two
children, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and
rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Susan de Sciora upon the occasion of her retirement after 28 years
of distinguished service as Director of Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library,
and to wish her well in all her future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Susan de Sciora.
