LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Nancy E. Fitch upon the occasion of her
retirement after 22 years of distinguished service to the Literacy
Volunteers Learning Center at the Mount Vernon Public Library
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Nancy E. Fitch upon the occasion of her retirement after 22 years of
distinguished service to the Literacy Volunteers Learning Center at the
Mount Vernon Public Library; a luncheon will be held in her honor on
Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Mount Vernon Public Library in Mt.
Vernon, New York; and
WHEREAS, Nancy E. Fitch was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and
moved to Scarsdale, New York, as a little girl; she attended Scarsdale
High School and then City College of New York; and
WHEREAS, For the past 22 years, Nancy E. Fitch rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to the Literacy Volunteers Learning
Center at the Mount Vernon Public Library as Coordinator, and led the
organization's involvement in the national African-American Read-In
Chain for 20 years; and
WHEREAS, Nancy E. Fitch's service and commitment to the betterment of
Mount Vernon and Westchester County is legendary; she is a former City
Clerk of Mount Vernon, the first woman and first African-American to
hold that post; in addition, she is the founder and was the first Presi-
dent of the National Black Women's Health Project; and
WHEREAS, Among her many accomplishments and honors, Nancy E. Fitch has
served as board member, Westchester County Office for Women; board
member/Treasurer, Westchester County Public/Private Partnership for
Senior Services; member, Advisory Committee of the Salvation Army; board
member, Mount Vernon Church Women United, as well as active on many
additional committees; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Nancy E. Fitch was a board member, Visiting
Nurse of Westchester; Consultant, Self-Help Clearing House; board
member, Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Conser-
vation; board member, Westchester County Urban League; Trustee, Afro-Am-
erican Cultural Foundation; executive board member, Mount Vernon Commu-
nity Action Group; board member and President, Mount Vernon Day Care
Center; Vice President, Key Women of America Mount Vernon Chapter; and
WHEREAS, Today, this nonagenarian brings her special wisdom, experi-
ence, and enthusiasm to countless endeavors, helping to shape and
strengthen the character of our communities and the quality of our
lives; in 1996, Nancy E. Fitch was inducted into the Westchester County
Senior Hall of Fame, and received their Leadership Award; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Robert F., and
their three children, Nancy E., Robert Franklin Ill, and Kevin D., all
of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and rejoice in her
achievements; and
WHEREAS, Literacy enables individuals to acquire the skills necessary
to be productive and successful in their personal and professional
lives; Nancy E. Fitch has brought the gift of literacy to untold numbers
of adult learners in the Mount Vernon community; and
WHEREAS, Individuals such as Nancy E. Fitch bring enduring honor to
themselves and their families, and stand as an inspiration to all; and
WHEREAS, In her capacity as Coordinator of the Literacy Volunteers
Learning Center at the Mount Vernon Public Library, Nancy E. Fitch
served with loyalty, honor and distinction, earning the admiration,
esteem and affection of her colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Nancy E. Fitch upon the occasion of her retirement after 22 years
of distinguished service to the Literacy Volunteers Learning Center at
the Mount Vernon Public Library; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Nancy E. Fitch.
