LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Joseph
Barry Council No. 2520 Knights of Columbus
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those fraternal organizations of high purpose and worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the
citizens of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 90th Anniversary of the Joseph Barry Council No. 2520 Knights
of Columbus, to be celebrated at a Cocktail Party Reception on Saturday,
April 12, 2014, at the Council Hall in Hicksville, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic
fraternal service organization; founded in the United States in 1882,
the organization was named in honor of Christopher Columbus, and
supports four ideals: charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism; and
WHEREAS, The Joseph Barry Council was established on January 20, 1924,
when a charter was granted by the Knights of Columbus and one hundred
and eleven men from the Hicksville community participated in the ceremo-
nies by which they became the group's charter members; and
WHEREAS, Committed to serving as a beacon of Columbian principles,
these dedicated founders chose the name of Joseph Barry, a local young
man of outstanding character who gave his life as a soldier in the
United States Army during World War I, for the Council's own; and
WHEREAS, The Joseph Barry Council has always prioritized the best
interests of youth and, in 1947, this fine organization established its
Squires Circle, a fraternal society which involves boys ages 10 to 18 in
programs to benefit the Catholic Church and the community, as well as
social and recreational activities; and
WHEREAS, On April 1, 1997, the Joseph Barry Council approved the
establishment of a Columbiettes Auxiliary, an organization of Catholic
women dedicated to its patronesses, Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Theresa the
Little Flower, and St. Joan of Arc; and
WHEREAS, The Joseph Barry Council has worked hard to be part of "the
strongest right arm of the Church," enriching the Church and the commu-
nity of Hicksville, New York; and
WHEREAS, For 90 years, the Joseph Barry Council No. 2520 Knights of
Columbus has truly lived up to its expressed commitment, serving as a
steadfast and effective participant in activities for the good of the
community and offering willing hands and hearts for the uplift of all;
and
WHEREAS, In so effectively carrying out its mission, the Joseph Barry
Council No. 2520 Knights of Columbus has demonstrated the value of
fostering camaraderie in a shared vision of community service; this
noble organization epitomizes the heart and soul of what it means to be
an American; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Joseph Barry Council No. 2520
Knights of Columbus; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Joseph Barry Council No. 2520 Knights of Columbus.
