LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Kate Sedlak upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2014 Rensselaer County YMCA's Outstand-
ing Student and Educator Award, on Wednesday March 26, 2014
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Kate Sedlak has given not only of her time and energies but
also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Kate Sedlak
upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the YMCA's Rensse-
laer County Student and Educator Award, to be celebrated on Wednesday,
March 26, 2014, at the Hudson Valley Community College Bulmer Telecommu-
nications Conference Center in Troy, New York; and
WHEREAS, The 9th Annual YMCA Rensselaer County Student and Educator
Awards honor those teachers and scholars who demonstrate outstanding
service to their schools and communities while embracing the YMCA's core
values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility; and
WHEREAS, Kate Sedlak has embodied these values, contributing her time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors, and always
giving of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, For the past 19 years, this esteemed woman has taught Biology
and Environmental Science at Catholic Central High School, pushing her
students to work hard and achieve at high levels both inside and outside
the classroom; and
WHEREAS, In her position as Student Council Moderator, Kate Sedlak has
enriched the lives of those under her care and given back to the commu-
nity; together with the 60 member Student Council, she coordinates the
Thanksgiving Food Drive, energizing the entire school to raise donations
that go towards making baskets of food, which the sophomore class helps
to pack and distribute to over 110 disadvantaged families in the area;
and
WHEREAS, Kate Sedlak also oversees the Christmas Adopt a Child
Program, where students conduct fundraisers and work with Unity House of
Troy, New York, to purchase presents for numerous needy children around
holidays; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable educator has helped the Student Council
become the heart of its school, organizing such other notable events as
the popular dodge ball tournament, the Irish Lunch on St. Patrick's Day,
Valentine's Day celebrations, and many others; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Kate Sedlak has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; she has instilled the values of responsi-
bility, empathy, and leadership to numerous young men and women at her
school; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Kate Sedlak upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the 2014 Rensselaer County YMCA's Outstanding Student and Educator
Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kate Sedlak.
