LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring The Reverend Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, upon
the occasion of stepping down as President of Mount Saint Mary College

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to recognize and pay tribute to
those individuals of firm faith and commitment who have devoted their
purposeful lives to the service of faith and community; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the eminent careers of esteemed residents of
this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concerns, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor The
Reverend Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, upon the occasion of stepping down as
President of Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York; a farewell
ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2014; and
WHEREAS, For the past six years, Reverend Kevin E. Mackin has rendered
faithful, conscientious and valuable service as President of Mount Saint
Mary College, earning the admiration, esteem and affection of his
colleagues; he will step down as President on June 30, 2014; and
WHEREAS, He began his productive tenure as Mount Saint Mary College's
fifth President on June 30, 2008; among his many accomplishments in this
capacity, Reverend Kevin E. Mackin facilitated a five-year strategic
plan with benchmarks; oversaw the successful conclusion of a capital
campaign, including a prestigious Kresge grant; initiated major capital
projects, including dining hall reconstruction, residence hall recon-
struction, turf field/tennis courts; purchased the Dominican Center
properties; and added 17 new faculty, including a new chair of the busi-
ness department; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Kevin E. Mackin's exemplary term at Mount Saint Mary
College has been the most recent example of this devoted man of God's
more than 50-year commitment to outstanding service and leadership in
the field of higher education; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Kevin E. Mackin is President Emeritus of Siena
College in Loudonville, New York; he served as its ninth president from
June 1, 1996 to May 31, 2007; and
WHEREAS, Under Reverend Kevin E. Mackin's leadership, Siena College
reached unprecedented growth in its offerings, with several state-of-
the-art additions, including: the Standish Library, Sarazen Student
Union, Key Auditorium, Serra Dining Hall, Morrell Science Center and a
synthetic turf field; the College also substantially increased technolo-
gy, created a college-wide honors program, added undergraduate nanotech-
nology courses, a Globalization Studies Program, Broadcast Studies and
the Center for the Study of Government and Politics; and
WHEREAS, A priest in the Order of Friars Minor, Province of the Most
Holy Name of Jesus, Reverend Kevin E. Mackin first served at Siena
College during the 1970s as an assistant and associate professor of
religious studies, chairman of the department and guardian (leader) of
its 50 member Franciscan community; and
WHEREAS, In 1982, Reverend Kevin E. Mackin was appointed president-
rector of Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, New York, and, during
that time, chaired the Seminary Department of the National Catholic
Educational Association in Washington, DC; in 1988, he was assigned to
direct development and public relations for the Franciscans of the Prov-
ince of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, based in New York City; he held a
number of positions in the province, including member of the Board of
Directors and education chairman; and
WHEREAS, Widely respected for his educational leadership, Reverend
Kevin E. Mackin served as a Commissioner of the Middle States Commission

on Higher Education, and was a member of the board of directors of the
Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities; in addition, he has
chaired the Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities, and the
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Council of Presidents; he is current-
ly a member of the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges & Univer-
sities, and serves as a Trustee of the Commission on Independent
Colleges and Universities in New York State; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Kevin E. Mackin has pursued his religious and
professional education throughout his career; he earned a bachelor's
degree in philosophy from St. Bonaventure University and a master's
degree in history from Siena College, and holds a bachelor's degree in
sacred theology, a master's in religious education, a licentiate of
sacred theology, and a doctorate in sacred theology cum laude from
Catholic University of America; and
WHEREAS, An alumnus of the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education,
Reverend Kevin E. Mackin completed courses in fundraising at the
National Society of Fund Raising Executives, Indiana University Center
on Philanthropy, and the Institute for Charitable Giving; he also
studied at the Instituto Mexicano Norteamericano in Mexico City, Mexico;
Laval University in Quebec City, Canada; Georgetown University in Wash-
ington, DC; and the World Council of Churches, Geneva, Switzerland; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated scholar as well as administrator, Reverend Kevin
E. Mackin has lectured on a variety of subjects, including the Bible,
Christian theology, contemporary Catholic and Protestant thought, and
the Gospels; his writings include the book, IN SEARCH OF THE AUTHENTIC
CHRISTIAN TRADITION; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Kevin E. Mackin has received numerous awards and
accolades for his work, including the Monsignor Burns Memorial Award,
the Tech Valley Business Hall of Fame Award, the Department of the
Army's Commander's Award for Public Service, the Marketer Executive
Citizen Award of Eastern New York, the Teresian Community Service Award,
the Dr. James M. Bell Humanitarian Award, and Irish Education 100; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor The Reverend Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, upon the occasion of stepping
down as President of Mount Saint Mary College, and to express its appre-
ciation for his many years of distinguished service in the field of

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Reverend Kevin E. Mackin, OFM.
