LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 70th Anniversary of ISLAND
DISPATCH

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious journalistic entities which have diligently and
consistently, year after year, recorded the history of their communities
and brought local news and news of the larger world to their readers;
and
WHEREAS, Our newspapers provide a tremendous service to citizens
across the State of New York by keeping them informed about current
events; the democracy of our State and Nation is strengthened by a
responsible citizenry which is actively engaged in reading and kept
abreast of news affecting their lives; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 70th Anniversary of ISLAND DISPATCH; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1944 by Oliver Howard, ISLAND DISPATCH became an
official newspaper in Erie County on January 6, 1966; and
WHEREAS, Since its inaugural issue, ISLAND DISPATCH has continuously
informed and entertained its readers, both in Grand Island and around
the world; and
WHEREAS, ISLAND DISPATCH is the official newspaper of Grand Island;
through editorial comment and ongoing coverage, the publication has been
instrumental in building new libraries, saving old churches, raising
local environmental questions, and monitoring the actions of local citi-
zens groups; and
WHEREAS, Generous with photographs of school and church activities,
ISLAND DISPATCH plays an integral role in the community through its
special columns designated for highlighting residents' birthdays, anni-
versaries, and accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, In addition, ISLAND DISPATCH provides a forum for local opin-
ion as well as an affordable medium for community organizations to reach
an immediate market; and
WHEREAS, As the ISLAND DISPATCH moves into the future, it carries with
it the legacy of a distinguished journalistic history and an outstanding
record of growth and achievement; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberation to
commemorate the 70th Anniversary of ISLAND DISPATCH; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to ISLAND DISPATCH.
