LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Sister Catherine Mezzacapo upon the
occasion of her designation for special recognition by Cellini Lodge No.
2206, Order Sons of Italy in America
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to publicly recognize
those extraordinary individuals who have made the success and progress
of society their life's work; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Sister Catherine Mezzacapo upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by Cellini Lodge No. 2206, Order Sons of Italy in
America; she will be celebrated at its 46th Annual
Scholarship/Charitable Benefit Dinner Dance on Friday, April 4, 2014, at
the Chateau Briand, Westbury, New York; and
WHEREAS, Cellini Lodge No. 2206, Order Sons of Italy in America is one
of the largest lodges of OSIA in New York State; for 46 years it has
demonstrated its commitment to the New Hyde Park, New York, community,
promoting education, culture, and charitable giving; and
WHEREAS, Sister Catherine Mezzacapo is being honored for her extraor-
dinary 76 years of service to others as a Sister of the Order of St.
Joseph, and for the invaluable contributions she has made to the commu-
nity in her inspiring career in education and social work; and
WHEREAS, Sister Catherine Mezzacapo, who received her bachelor's
degree in Education and master's degree in French from St. John's
University, Queens, New York, has devoted her purposeful life to the
care and education of children; she taught in the Diocese of Brooklyn,
and then at St. Joseph's Academy in Rockville Centre, New York; this
talented educator then moved into administration, serving as Principal
of St. Patrick's School in Smithtown, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1972, this beloved woman of God transitioned into social
work, becoming Associate Director of Catholic Charities for the Diocese
of Rockville Centre; she returned to education as an administrator at
St. John's University, from which she retired in 1998; and
WHEREAS, Sister Catherine Mezzacapo's compassionate and effective
endeavors have earned her numerous accolades; she received the Voice For
All Children Award in 2008 from the Coalition Against Child Abuse and
Neglect, where she served on the Board of Directors for more than 30
years, and she has also been honored by St. John's University in recog-
nition of her extraordinary contributions to education and social work;
and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Sister Catherine Mezzacapo has
displayed throughout her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Sister Catherine Mezzacapo upon the occasion of her designation
for special recognition by Cellini Lodge No. 2206, Order Sons of Italy
in America; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sister Catherine Mezzacapo.
