LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Eugene J. Corsale, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to publicly mourn the death of
Eugene J. Corsale, of Saratoga Springs, New York, who passed away on
Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the age of 85; and
WHEREAS, Eugene J. Corsale, a well-known advocate for veterans and
historical preservation, was born on July 25, 1928, in Glens Falls, New
York, the son of the late Joseph and Angela Marcantonio Corsale; and
WHEREAS, Upon graduation from Saratoga Springs High School, Eugene J.
Corsale was employed by the Delaware and Hudson Railroad as a locomotive
fireman and later for the Ballston Spa Railroad relocation project and
the Adirondack branch of the railroad at North Creek, NY; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man served his country as a member of the
United States Navy during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954; he was
awarded numerous honors and citations including the Korean Service Medal
with one battle star and the Combat Action Medal; in addition, he also
received the New York State Senate Liberty Medal and the Medal for
Merit; and
WHEREAS, Upon returning home, Eugene J. Corsale re-entered civilian
life, marrying the former Barbara Holtmeyer on August 20th, 1961, at St.
Mary's Star of the Sea Church, Far Rockaway, NY; and
WHEREAS, Eugene J. Corsale worked 19 years for the International Paper
Company and was a licensed real estate broker; he also worked for the
City of Saratoga Springs Assessment Department and was Saratoga County
Director of Real Property Tax Services; and
WHEREAS, After retiring in 1995, Eugene J. Corsale continued to pursue
his passion for trains and community involvement as a conductor on the
Upper Hudson River Railroad Scenic Train Line, while working with numer-
ous other rail organizations; furthermore in 2002, he began the monthly
Video Train Show program held at the Saratoga Springs Public Library;
and
WHEREAS, Eugene J. Corsale consistently displayed a strong commitment
to civic involvement through volunteer work and memberships on numerous
boards of directors for benevolent organizations; in 2003, he received
the Saratoga Springs Rotary Club's "Senior Citizen of the Year," as well
as the "Red Carpet Award" from the Lake George-Adirondack Regional
Convention and Visitors Bureau; and
WHEREAS, For his work with area historical societies, Eugene J.
Corsale earned the Historical Preservation Medal and the 2007 Spirit of
Preservation Award from the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation;
and
WHEREAS, This proud naval veteran was extremely dedicated to veterans'
causes; his work was vital in the efforts to rename Geyser Park fields
as "Veterans Memorial Park" and inaugurating the annual Remembrance Day
Ceremony to honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001; he
also is responsible for the installation and dedication of the monument
plaque on Railroad Place to those involved in the "Iraq-Afghanistan War
and the Global War on Terrorism"; and
WHEREAS, Eugene J. Corsale was chairman of the USS Saratoga Committee
for the restoration of the Saint Peter's War Memorial on Broadway, and
was also the originator and co-chairman of the monthly Saratoga County
Honor a Deceased Veteran program; furthermore he was project coordinator
in the restoration of the nearly two-century-old Gideon Putnam Burial
Ground on the city's West Side; and
WHEREAS, A man of faith, Eugene J. Corsale was a communicant at the
Church of Saint Peter and was honored by Saint Peter's-Saratoga Springs
Catholic Central High School with the Outstanding Citizen Award for
dedicated service to the Saratoga Springs Community at their 2000 Hall
of Fame Ceremony; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his sister, Anna, and two brothers, Dennis and
Francis, Eugene J. Corsale is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara;
his brother, Joseph Jr.; two daughters, Angela (Joseph) and Anne (Gary);
and his three grandchildren, Gregory, Caroline and Colin, as well as
several nieces and cousins; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and remembered by a loving family Eugene J. Corsale leaves
behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will
remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Eugene J. Corsale; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Eugene J. Corsale.
