LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Ed Devitt upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Alumni Leadership Award by SUNY Orange
Foundation
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Ed Devitt has given not only of his time and energies but
also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Ed Devitt
upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Alumni Leader-
ship Award by SUNY Orange Foundation; he will be celebrated at the foun-
dation's 8th Annual Leadership Awards Ceremony, featuring The Spirit of
Entrepreneurship, on Thursday, April 10, 2014, on the SUNY Orange
Newburgh, New York, campus; and
WHEREAS, Ed Devitt, co-owner and operator of Devitt Management Associ-
ates, and member of the Orange County Community College (SUNY Orange)
Class of 1966, has long been a leader within the Orange County local and
regional business communities, as well as a dedicated public servant,
and supporter of charitable endeavors; and
WHEREAS, In addition to being a previous co-owner of the master fran-
chise for Super 8 Motels in New York, Ed Devitt has been the founder and
president of several corporations in New York State, including Super 8
Motels Northeast, Super 8 Management East, Winding Hills Golf Course,
The Barge Inn/Super 8 Motel of Ithaca, Springhouse Apartments and
others; this enterprising man is an emeritus board member of the Orange
County Chamber of Commerce, and a founder of the Town of Montgomery
Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Ed Devitt served his community with integrity and dedication
for two terms as an Orange County Legislator, representing the 18th
District from 1978 to 1986; he has also been a member of the Town of
Montgomery Planning Board, Town of Montgomery Board of Assessors, Orange
County Water Authority among other public bodies; and
WHEREAS, Ed Devitt is also dedicated to charitable and volunteer
endeavors; he has previously held president, director or executive
director roles with Montgomery Fire Department, Wallkill Engine and Hose
Company, Community Foundation of Orange County, Orange County Citizens
Foundation, Village of Montgomery Historical Society and Walden Rotary
Club; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Ed Devitt has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Ed Devitt has displayed throughout
his life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Ed Devitt upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Alumni Leadership Award by SUNY Orange Foundation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Ed Devitt.
