LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Port
Washington Garden Club

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to honor those illus-
trious individuals and organizations of the State of New York whose
purposeful endeavors serve to enhance the quality of life in their
communities; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 90th Anniversary of the Port Washington Garden Club to be
celebrated on Thursday, May 22, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The Port Washington Garden Club was established in 1924 by
Anne Barton in Port Washington, New York; its members used to meet in
each other's homes every two weeks, plan civic activities, exchange
seeds and plants, and have lunch; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Port Washington Garden Club, a not-for-profit
organization, is part of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State;
its members meet monthly at the Port Washington Library for lectures on
horticulture, holiday decorating, house plants, workshops on dried and
fresh flower arrangements, visiting gardens when in bloom, and have
lunch; and
WHEREAS, The mission of the Port Washington Garden Club is the beauti-
fication of their town; throughout the year, they offer a scholarship
fund for students of horticulture, holiday decorating at the local
library, three window boxes at the railroad station, a large planter at
the Town Dock, and weekly arrangements at the library; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its distinguished history, the Port Washington
Garden Club has diligently served the residents of Port Washington, New
York, and its surrounding communities; it has made a difference in every
life it touches and has had a positive impact throughout the entire
region; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that when organ-
izations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Port Washington Garden Club; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Port Washington Garden Club.
