LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Korean American Parents Associ-
ation of Greater New York upon the occasion of hosting its 23rd Annual
Teacher's Day Celebration on May 22, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of organizations
and individuals who devote themselves to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Korean American Parents Association of Greater New York upon the
occasion of hosting its 23rd Annual Teacher's Day Celebration, to be
held on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Dae Dong Manor in Flushing, New York;
and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1991, the Korean American Parents Association of
Greater New York (KAPANY) is a non-profit, non-partisan, education and
community advocacy organization; and
WHEREAS, KAPANY is dedicated to promoting active participation of
Korean American parents in the public school system, building a
relationship based on mutual respect and understanding among students,
parents, teachers, and public school officials, and advocating parents'
and students' rights, which may not as yet be fully realized due to
cultural, linguistic and educational differences between the United
States and Korea; and
WHEREAS, KAPANY provides translation for non-English speaking parents,
helps them understand the structure of schools, offers Parent Workshops
in Korean regularly, enhances the sensitivity of school faculty and
staff toward Korean culture and tradition, and celebrates the cultural
diversity of the student bodies that make up the schools in New York
City; and
WHEREAS, Principals, teachers and educators are invited to the Teach-
er's Day Celebration once a year every May to introduce them to the
cultural differences and help school communities to provide the most
desirable academic environment for Korean American students and fami-
lies; and
WHEREAS, Korea has a long tradition of sincere respect and admiration
for teachers; students are taught to respect their teachers from the
very first time they enter a school; and
WHEREAS, Respect for teachers doesn't only take place in schools but
also in each household; it goes along with Korean culture where the
elderly are greatly respected for their lifelong wisdom and hard work
for the society; Korean culture has genuine respect for teachers who
teach academic skills as well as social behavior; and
WHEREAS, KAPANY continues this tradition by sponsoring an event in
honor of teachers and educators; this celebration of teachers is a great
cultural extravaganza where educators and parents come together as part-
ners; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that when organ-
izations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Korean American Parents Association of Greater New York upon
the occasion of hosting its 23rd Annual Teacher's Day Celebration; and
be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Korean American Parents Association of Greater New York.
